"President Trump promised to replace the Affordable Care Act with something that is better, is cheaper and covers more people. Scratch that. Republican leaders in the House and Mr. Trump’s secretary of health and human services released a plan last week that would provide insurance that is far inferior, shift more medical costs onto families and cover far fewer people."

"As a presidential candidate, Trump campaigned on the promise of dismantling and replacing former President Barack Obama's signature healthcare law, vowing to do so swiftly after taking office.

But some congressional Republicans have voiced concerns over repealing the law too hastily, saying that doing so could effectively take health insurance away from the roughly 20 million people insured under the law."

"Medicaid block grants could save $110-150 billion and would eliminate the perverse incentive. Sounds like a great idea. It makes wonderful sound bytes, and the GOP seems to want to run with it.

There is just one teeny, tiny problem with block grants as proposed: no health care."

"Both a repeal of the ACA’s Medicaid expansion and alternative approaches to funding, such as block grants, are now under discussion. These changes may result in less federal funds for states to spend on Medicaid, and lead to reduced access to care, reduced payments to health care providers, and job losses."

"But it was not until now, with the Republicans taking control of the federal government, that the debate fully shifted from the theoretical to the tangible. It was easy for conservatives to rally against a law identified with a president they despised when he was capable of vetoing any repeal. Now that he is gone and the law’s benefits appear to be on the chopping block, the people who stand to lose the most are the most vocal."

"Two Republican lawmakers representing reliably conservative districts on opposite ends of the country on Saturday faced down heated questions from Obamacare supporters who flooded town hall events demanding that Congress not dismantle a health care law that has provided insurance for millions of people."

"As Republicans look at ways to replace or repair the health law, many suggest shrinking the list of services insurers are required to offer in individual and small group plans would reduce costs and increase flexibility. That option came to the forefront last week when Seema Verma, who is slated to run the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in the Trump administration, noted at her confirmation hearing that coverage for maternity services should be optional in those health plans.

Maternity coverage is a popular target and one often mentioned by health law critics, but other items also could be watered down or eliminated."

"Early on Friday morning, February 10, 2017, the Senate approved Tom Price as Health and Human Services Secretary by a straight party-line vote. And early on the morning of February 15, HHS released its first notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) of the Price era. Although Congress continues to debate repeal and replacement (or repair) of the Affordable Care Act, the proposed rule is not intended either to repeal or replace the ACA, but rather to shore up the individual health insurance markets pending a possible repeal. It is also the first step taken by HHS to fulfil President Trump’s agenda announced by executive order on Inauguration Day to unwind ACA regulatory requirements."

"As part of their medical practices, some doctors routinely ask patients about various potential health and safety risks, including household chemicals, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, swimming pools, and firearms. A number of leading medical organizations, and some of their members, believe that unsecured firearms 'in the home increase risks of injury, especially for minors and those suffering from depression or dementia.'

"In an effort to prevent and reduce firearm-related deaths and injuries, particularly to children, the American Medical Association 'encourages its members to inquire as to the presence of household firearms as a part of childproofing the home and to educate patients to the dangers of firearms to children.'"
