Prior to my trip to Norway I was in Alaska and returned home just long enough to repack my bags and clean my gear. We had a week with the bears in Lake Clark National Park and captured so many incredible images. This one is two twin bears being affectionate on the shores of Cook Inlet while waiting for their mom to catch another fish. I look forward to sharing many more bear photos with you very soon.

I just returned from an unforgettable workshop in Lofoten Norway with another great group of participants! Thanks everyone for joining me and sharing such an amazing experience! We enjoyed record setting conditions and a vibrant Aurora Borealis show every night that we went out looking to photograph it. The clearest night skies perfectly aligned with the days that the Northern Lights solar activity peaked and provided us with the most incredible displays. This was one of many from the workshop that I wanted to share, it is a personal favorite of mine from the trip. I hope you enjoy it!

Every so often I come across another article or social media post bemoaning an over-abundance of imagery from popular destinations of the same compositions. They range in tenor from casual dialogue to an all out inditement and incrimination against those photographing these locations. In light of the fact that I regularly lead photographers to Countries like Iceland, Norway and different parts of Africa (that are all very popular for photography), I always find these conversations interesting.
A couple years ago I wrote a piece about photography in Iceland, sharing my thoughts that it is a land of far more potential than just waterfalls and the typical cliche images we've all seen countless times. I encouraged those visiting Iceland to work on creating new, original photographs. I think we can all agree that it is typically these overshot, routine compositions that caught our interest for a particular destination at some point along the line, and these same shots are often responsible for making these Countries popular photographic destinations in the first place. My portfolio is not devoid of some of these iconic compositions, and if I visit one of them in better light than I have previously photographed it, then I will shoot it again. However due to the fact that I visit these popular destinations multiple times each year, I tend to spend my time looking for new compositions and interpretations of that Country. Please don't assume that just because you repeatedly see the same compositions coming from a popular photographic destination that there isn't endless potential there, you just have to go find it. For example, here's an image from Iceland you've never seen before taken just a couple weeks ago, I hope you enjoy it.

New Zealand's lush, dense rainforest can be a challenge to photograph, but when you find a well lit opening it creates a magical scene.

The Solar Effect | New Zealand
Sunrise looking towards the twin peaks of Mount Tasman and Mount Cook. There was just the right combination of light and clouds to make an amazing display in the sky. Not a moment I'll soon forget. There are some moments behind the lens for which there are no words.

Clown Of The Sea | Atlantic Puffin
Iceland - July, 2016
Would you know how to shoot this scene at dusk and create a successful image? If you're shooting with me on one of my photo tours or safaris you will. Don't stop shooting just because the sun has set! This image was captured well after sunset using only ambient, natural light. Wildlife tends to be more active at dawn and dusk, so knowing how to shoot properly for these low light conditions is critical in achieving desirable results.
