This is likely to be similar. In Canada we are accustomed to having 1 year parental leave, but in California where 3 months is customary(*) I would think anybody taking longer might be viewed by peers as abusing the policy.
(*) Notably, at tech companies at least, employers still pay full salary during that time, and both parents often take the full 3 months before hiring a nanny at 6 months.
