A Gentle Giant

Apparently this is the first photo I've posted on Google+ for a looooooong time.  Too long.  Sorry about that.

Anyway, this photo was taken at the weekend at West Midlands Safari Park.  I managed to snap this through one of those criss-cross fences with my 55-200mm lens maxed out at 200mm.  I couldn't believe the quality of the image given that it was handheld, from a distance, and of an animal which are sometimes prone to moving around  :)

When I saw the photo on the back of my camera I thought "ooh, this must be what it feels like to be +Mike Shaw, a wildlife shooting ninja!"

He/she is a white bengal tiger and I got very lucky with the timing here.  I think I order a nice print of this one.

I hope y'all like it.

Thanks Mike. I'm very glad luck was on my side at the weekend.

Sgwd yr Eira

This weekend I went away to Wales and managed to hike my way through the scorching hot sun to Sgwd yr Eira, one of the spectacular waterfalls in the Brecon Beacons.

You can actually walk behind this waterfall and while I was there I even saw one very happy lady be proposed to behind the waterfall by her slightly damp boyfriend.

This photo was taken with my Lee Big Stopper filter which allowed me to shoot it on a 90 second exposure. I'm really pleased with how this one came out.

Barbury Sunset

This photo was taken a couple of weeks ago minutes before sundown - I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time with this one.

My New Favourite Photo

This is my new favourite photo (that I've personally taken).

It was taken around 10 minutes after sunset at Barbury Castle, Wiltshire the other night.  I had actually packed up and was on my way back to the car as it was quite creepy up there all by myself but I had to unpack everything and snap a few more shots when I saw this spectacular scene.

I might actually get this printed out quite big and hang it up somewhere.

Flower at Sundown

I've been so incredibly busy recently that I haven't had much of a chance to get out and about with my camera but fortunately I was able to find some time on Tuesday night.

This was taken at a place called Barbury Castle near my hometown of Swindon.  It turned out better than I expected so I'm quite pleased about that  :)

A favour for some friends

I'm normally almost exclusively a landscape guy but it's good to mix it up and try different things from time to time.

I was delighted when some good friends of mine asked me to do some pre-wedding photos of the groom and others getting ready (the pro took care of the bride).

Here is a small selection from the set of images I took for them.

I also wrote a quick blog entry about it all here: -

Great video (as always) on negative space by +Mike Browne

Negative Space adds impact and peace to a composition - how can it possibly do both?

Introduction
ME

Born and raised (proudly) in Swindon, in South West England.  It's not the most glamorous place on earth but I quite like it and it's where I call home.  I'm an avid supporter of my local football team too - Swindon Town.

I work in IT, don't get enough sleep, and am immensely lucky to have the most kind hearted partner there is in my little June.

PHOTOGRAPHY

2012 has seen me further my interest in photography and develop it to a level of which I'm quite proud.  I take photos of all manner of things but landscapes are my favourite.  About half of my photos are processed using HDR which I believe, when done right, can be a fantastic tool to the photographer.  Unfortunately, it can also be too easy to massacre a photo with as well - which seems all too popular a road to go down.
