The rebuild begins.

The original rear hub of my ELF (pictured on the wheel below) failed a few times last year, and the bearings (which apparently are not available as a replacement item) were beginning to resemble the shape of an American football more than the European football they were intended to look like.

Instead of simply replacing the rear hub, I have decided to redesign the drivetrain completely.  The ELF is now built with a "mid-drive", meaning both human gear shifter and electric motor are located inside the ELF and the only thing on the rear wheel is a really durable hub.  My original plan was to flip the motor, reverse the wires to it so it runs "backward", and put the human hub (a used NuVinci N360) under the seat.

Sadly, I discovered that my motor is not a reversible direct-drive brushless motor like they are now using, but a MAC 12T, which has a freewheel.  I could reverse the wiring, but the motor would just make very loud spinny noises.  Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Honestly, I didn't like the idea of the human gear hub sitting under my seat with chainrings and chains ready to grab any loose clothing or fingers that happen to wander in their vicinity.

Since my electric motor was actually designed to be a rear hub - it's going to be my new rear hub.  I'm having a custom 24" wheel made of 13 gauge spokes laced around it now (instead of the current 26" wheel) and I will be getting a 3" Kenda Flame tire to put on it.  That will cost me a bit of efficiency, but I'll be running the same shock and vibration-absorbing tire out back that I am currently running out front.

Then, where the electric motor used to be, I'll install the new (to me) NuVinci.

This has some major advantages over the original drivetrain design, first and foremost being that all of the torque provided by the electric motor will ONLY affect the electric motor itself and the wheel that is laced around it.  No more jimmying power from an electric motor into a southpaw freewheel installed over the brake rotor.  The only power coming in from that interface will now be much lower-level human pedal power.

I could have reused my i3, since the new configuration is much easier on hubs than even normal bicycle use.  But I decided the temptation of CVT shifting and the ability to shift while under load was too tempting, and the additional gearing range means I can climb hills more effectively and pedal effectively when the ELF electrics are at top speed.

Some parts should be in today, and I can get some basic prep work done.  The remainder should be in next week, and hopefully next weekend I can put it all back together.  I'm sure something will go wrong - it always does - but with any luck I can quickly source any missing parts and be back on the road in a little over a week.

There was a hub upgrade to the NuVinci available when I bought mine, and Organic tried to sell me pretty hard on it, especially given my intended use.  I just couldn't justify the extra $500 upgrade charge.

But, yeah, my use is a little different from most buyers - most people use it to replace a car on urban/suburban errands, not as a mid-distance commuter.

I was watching the Play Store for a while, or others would mention them to me, +Leon Rodgers

And as far as circles, I have no idea.  I certainly haven't banned you.  Did I do something long since forgotten to cheese you off at some point?  (grin)

Brew day!

Today I will be making my first all-grain recipe.  Still from a kit, but no extract- Brew In A Bag.  Today's brew is "sweet stout".

The iron frame is what got me. Stays pretty hot, even without the flame.

I do not see any point in complicated spellings. Why cant THROUGH be THRU and why can't NEIGHBOUR simply be NEBOR. There are so many other words with an overload of Letters - 'maneouvre' for example. US spellings are a bit less unreasonable.but we need further pruning.

A couple of good friends could really use some good news.  They had to take their kids, who are very important to the community that is our school, out due to financial difficulties.  Please throw a few bucks in the hat to help us rebuild our community.  Thank you.

Dear friends, We are asking your help to send our children back to Merriconeag Waldorf School, where they have been educated since kindergarten. This has been an extraordinary place of learning and, beyond that, a second home to Maxwell and Ellie. The community of teachers, students, parents, and...

True. Nate is correct the public school system our government runs is horrible. While the US may provide public education financed by our tax dollars, contrary to popular belief, we in the US have a poor public education system.

Managed one commute on the ELF this week. Which is more than zero, so that's something. :)

+Tod Detre Yes, when the temps are below about 50, I take it inside to charge.  So temperature might not have much of an effect on range overall.  We shall see.

Watching "Primeval" on Amazon Prime. Bad effects, iffy acting, but judicious use of the Wilhelm Scream, so it's got that going for it, which is pretty sweet.

We're into season 2 and now it's a game recognizing it. They Foley over parts of it, or distort it, so catching all of them can be a challenge.

Latest batch of Red (Cabernet/Merlot blend) needs two weeks of clarifying but looks pretty clear already.

I know, odd promotion, Google being Google, but a few people have asked, so...  if you want an invite NOW is the time.

ELF PRICE REDUCED
A friend in Bath needs to sell his ELF, and has reduced the price from $5,250 (which I already thought was very fair) to $4,800. This is a 1.0 identical to mine, except it is in the Mango (bright orange) color and has a CVT NuVinci gearing system for the human pedal side instead of the 3-speed I have. About 500 miles on it.
His commute changed and he ended up needing to buy a car, and he needs his garage space back.
If you are in the market for an ELF, this is a really good price. He's taking a significant loss to clear it out.
If you are interested, please contact me and I'll put you in touch.
