The rebuild begins.

The original rear hub of my ELF (pictured on the wheel below) failed a few times last year, and the bearings (which apparently are not available as a replacement item) were beginning to resemble the shape of an American football more than the European football they were intended to look like.

Instead of simply replacing the rear hub, I have decided to redesign the drivetrain completely.  The ELF is now built with a "mid-drive", meaning both human gear shifter and electric motor are located inside the ELF and the only thing on the rear wheel is a really durable hub.  My original plan was to flip the motor, reverse the wires to it so it runs "backward", and put the human hub (a used NuVinci N360) under the seat.

Sadly, I discovered that my motor is not a reversible direct-drive brushless motor like they are now using, but a MAC 12T, which has a freewheel.  I could reverse the wiring, but the motor would just make very loud spinny noises.  Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

Honestly, I didn't like the idea of the human gear hub sitting under my seat with chainrings and chains ready to grab any loose clothing or fingers that happen to wander in their vicinity.

Since my electric motor was actually designed to be a rear hub - it's going to be my new rear hub.  I'm having a custom 24" wheel made of 13 gauge spokes laced around it now (instead of the current 26" wheel) and I will be getting a 3" Kenda Flame tire to put on it.  That will cost me a bit of efficiency, but I'll be running the same shock and vibration-absorbing tire out back that I am currently running out front.

Then, where the electric motor used to be, I'll install the new (to me) NuVinci.

This has some major advantages over the original drivetrain design, first and foremost being that all of the torque provided by the electric motor will ONLY affect the electric motor itself and the wheel that is laced around it.  No more jimmying power from an electric motor into a southpaw freewheel installed over the brake rotor.  The only power coming in from that interface will now be much lower-level human pedal power.

I could have reused my i3, since the new configuration is much easier on hubs than even normal bicycle use.  But I decided the temptation of CVT shifting and the ability to shift while under load was too tempting, and the additional gearing range means I can climb hills more effectively and pedal effectively when the ELF electrics are at top speed.

Some parts should be in today, and I can get some basic prep work done.  The remainder should be in next week, and hopefully next weekend I can put it all back together.  I'm sure something will go wrong - it always does - but with any luck I can quickly source any missing parts and be back on the road in a little over a week.

I was watching the Play Store for a while, or others would mention them to me, +Leon Rodgers

And as far as circles, I have no idea.  I certainly haven't banned you.  Did I do something long since forgotten to cheese you off at some point?  (grin)

This decision has been a while in the making, but I have decided it is time to sell the ELF. I love it, and it's a joy to drive and hauls a lot of stuff. I can't afford both it and a nice 2-wheel bicycle, and I think a 2-wheeler fits better with my commute.

I would prefer to sell it to someone local so I can help with maintenance if needed and I don't have to deal with long-distance delivery and all the scams on Craigslist. If you are within 20 miles of me, I'll drive it to you!

I will help you arrange transport if you need it shipped.  Shipping is not included in the price.

Includes 48V 10Ah LIFEPO4 battery and charger. The built-in 60W solar panel can also keep the battery charged as long as you aren't driving a LOT of miles daily.

Bumper stickers can be left on or removed, your choice.

Asking $4,500.
