I love how this three fellow (and also pretty well-known) scientists write about Marvin Minsky as a scientist and as a person on the "Remembering Minsky" page on edge.org. It's not just a full appraisal but there's a critical voice to Minsky's scientific work or personality as well, not letting us, the laypeople, get into the position of conditionless adorement of some unreal and idealized image, but keeping us well informed with eyes open to reality. Which is a good thing - after all we're in the business of science, that is the business of truth.

Here are some of the witty remarks:
"Marvin is a brilliant man and deserves a lot of credit for getting cognitive science started [...] But [..] He's become a guru, as opposed to following in depth the actual empirical work [...] Too much of his work comes out of armchair pronouncements, as opposed to fieldwork and laboratory work." Steven Pinker
"Minsky and I have very similar views on a lot of things; it's just that I think the problems are harder than Marvin does. Marvin thinks he's solved them all, and he expects everyone to understand that. It's not as hard as they think, he thinks, if they'd all just pay attention to him! [...] Even if Minsky is right, you can't get everything you need just by reading Minsky. [...] Not all of Minsky's ideas are good, but many of them are." Daniel Dennett
"As a scientist, he's one of the many voices of people coming up with a fundamental insight about multiple levels of agents in the cognitive system. As a person, I find him a pain in the ass, but that's on a different register. " Francisco Varela

The Kickstarter campaign of HALLUCINAUT – An Epic Film of Microscopic Magnitude has just launched. It's produced by Terry Gilliam, creator of 12 monkeys and Fear and loathing in Las Vegas... It's no questions that it is going to be crayyyzeee

For everyone interested in learning about technological singularity, artificial intelligence and many fascinating related subjects I strongly advise to follow +Nikola Danaylov who is doing a tremendous job by creating his series of interviews with experts of tech frontiers from around the globe. On his blog Singularity1on1 among many others he collects thoughts, ideas and advices from giants like +Ray Kurzweil, +Peter H. Diamandis, Jeremy Rifkin, Michio Kaku or Marvin Minsky himself.

This looks very interesting.
Here is the link to the open letter: http://futureoflife.org/misc/open_letter
Stephen Hawking, Elon Musk, and many other prominent figures have signed an open letter pushing for responsible AI oversight in order to mitigate risks and ensure the "societal benefit" of the technology.

By the way, in this article Kurzweil mentions my favorite authors, Steven Pinker's recent book, The Better Angels of Our Nature. It's not a surprise - Pinker's book, which is about the decline of violence in human history, has been quoted widely and many says it's the best scientific book of 2012 which might give you a hint why Mark Zuckerberg picked it as the second book in his A Year Of Books club.
Pinker rulez!

"Most of space is just space" Get a sense of the real scales of the solar system here:

It would take about seven months to travel this distance in a spaceship. Better be some good in-flight entertainment. In case you're wondering, you'd need about 2000 feature-length movies to occupy that many waking hours. Sit back and relax. Jupiter is more than 3 times as far as we just ...

So my question about quantum computing is still this:
Would QC mean merely a robust acceleration of our computing capacity or would it bring along a different philosophy, a conceptual change of how we perceive problems? Are there specific problems which are just sitting there waiting to be solved by QC? If QC will solve todays very hard problems easily, then would it also bring along a new way of how we think of the problems themsleves? Will QC bring along a different view of the world with different questions, concepts, attitudes toward problem solutions, or the only change it will bring will be the change in the speed of the computation?

In other words: Will quantum computers be very fast cars with the most powerful internal combustion engines ever, or will they be teleportation machines?

Should we switch the way we think when it comes to quantum computing?

In his recent lecture +Matthias Troyer  touches this question (aming many others) and actually has some answers too! If you're interested in quantum computing I strongly advise you to watch this and follow his updates. I was so happy to find this video on the Googletechtalks youtube channel! His mathematician mind revolves around those questions which interest my mathematically immature mind the most.
