Post Card Memory
I've been cleaning out my office at home. I found a small box with lots of letters and postcards from my father to my mother.  My father was drafted into the Navy in late 1943 (at the age of 34).  He was one of the oldest on his ship (a Landing Craft Infant...

Dual Monitors - Vanity or Productivity Booster?
For quite some time, I noticed that some people that I considered very "techie" to have two or even more than two monitors.  To be honest I felt that it was just a bit ostentatious. Then for some reason (I can't remember exactly how right now), I came into ...

Commencement Scheduled for May 16th and 17th at Wichita State University
For the first time in 33 years, I will neither feel guilty about missing commencement nor unhappy that I am missing a celebration of my birthday!  One of the things that always bothered me a bit about the academic life, was that Spring Commencement (the lar...

A neat idea for those of you who might need an in-class exercise - suitable for a class in teamwork?

"And those of you who are interested may want to go to MarshmallowChallenge.com. It's a blog that you can look at how to build the marshmallows. There's step-by-step instructions on this. There are crazy examples from around the world of how people tweak and adjust the system."

http://marshmallowchallenge.com/Welcome.html
Tom Wujec presents some surprisingly deep research into the "marshmallow problem" -- a simple team-building exercise that involves dry spaghetti, one yard of tape and a marshmallow. Who can build the tallest tower with these ingredients? And why does a surprising group always beat the average?
