Nancy Atkinson, You need to acknowledge that the watch that EVERY APOLLO CREW MEMBER WORE, The OMEGA SPEEDMASTER  saved their lives, It was used to Time the retro correction burn  , to correct there trajectory back to earth. Without the OMEGA WATCH they would still be out there SOMEWHERE.

A milestone for me... 10 years since I wrote my first article for +Universe Today . I wrote about it on my blog. Special thanks to +Fraser Cain !!
Today is an important milestone for me, personally and professionally. 10 years ago today I wrote my first article for Universe Today. The rest, as they say, is history. How this English Major became a science writer is a bit of a long story, one to maybe tell another day.

For the 45th anniversary of Apollo 11, I offer (in all humbleness) a song I wrote about Mike Collins and Apollo 11. This originally aired 5 years ago for the 40th anniversary. Thanks to +Tavi Greiner  for reminding me about it!

Has anyone considered the plasma cloud produced by the two ejected subsystems, the LEM and the service module, adding to the obfuscation of the comm channel to explain the extra 87 seconds? I suspect the combined mass of those two elements which likely exceeded the abltion products of the re-enrty module could be an explanation, if their timing and trajectory checks.

Can someone tell me how to turn off the birthday calendar from the new Google Calendar update?  I mean I love you all, but having over 20,000 birthdays suddenly show up on my already full calendar is just a bit too much!  I don't seem to be able to edit the settings for it in any fashion.

A warm welcome to +Joshua Carroll to the +Universe Today writing team!  His first article has been published: http://www.universetoday.com/114617/a-fun-way-of-understanding-emc2/
Many people fail to realize just how much energy there is locked up in matter. The nucleus of any atom is an oven of intense radiation, and when you open the oven door, that energy spills out; oftentimes violently. However, there is something even more intrinsic to this aspect of matter that escaped scientists for…

Big Congrats to Fraser and Universe Today - the Guide to Space videos won a Parsec Award for Best Fact Behind the Fiction Show this weekend at DragonCon! Fraser and Jay have worked hard to get this award! Here are a few photos of Fraser's reaction to the news, taken by sneaky Parsec Committee member Bruce Press!

Gravity Is Distorted/Curved Spacetime?

Dov,

I have a problem with your explanation of gravity, correct me if I'm wrong:
There are  fundamental forces in nature… but gravity is not a force!!! It’s a distortion in space time.

IMO this distortion has been/ is ONLY in the minds of some humans, including Einstein's…

Woohoo!

Universe Today Wins a Parsec Award for the Guide to Space!

As you might know, a few of us were attending Dragon*Con this weekend in Atlanta, where the Parsec Awards (http://www.parsecawards.com) are held every year. Astronomy Cast has been up for a nomination every year, but we’ve always lost out to other folks like Star Talk and Planetary Radio.

Well, this year, we took a different tack and submitted our Guide to Space video series for the Fact Behind the Fiction category… and we won!

A big thanks and congratulations to my video co-creator, +Jason Harmer as well as everyone else who has helped us write, edit, produce and shoot these videos: +Susan Murph, +Brian Koberlein , +Chad Weber  , +Scott Lewis+Kevin Gill and +Elizabeth Howell.

If you haven't seen these yet, you need to check out these cool graphics put together by +Ciro Villa that compare asteroid sizes to places on Earth, providing a much-needed frame of reference!
So, how big is that space rock? Sometimes when I see data on sizes and distances in relation to stuff out in space, it's hard to get a frame of reference, since those two categories tend to lean towards the super-big. But now, I've got a little help. Space enthusiast and software engineer Ciro Villa…
