Since going public as a #mentalhealth advocate, I've identified myself as living with #anxiety, #agoraphobia, and #depression and that's mostly true. I have been clinically diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder and agoraphobia; however, I have not been diagnosed with depression. Rather, it's a symptom of the other mental illnesses I have. https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/arthur-gallant/mental-illness-shame_a_23529087/

About one in five #children in the United States shows signs of a #mentalhealth disorder — anything from #ADHD to #eatingdisorders to #suicide.
And yet, as we've been reporting this month, many schools aren't prepared to work with these students. Often, there's been too little training in recognizing the problems, the staff who are trained are overworked, and there just isn't enough money.
When there are enough people to handle the job, how should all the different roles fit together? https://www.npr.org/sections/ed/2016/09/20/459843929/heres-how-schools-can-support-students-mental-health

"I heard what sounded like a train brake, followed by a metal on metal noise.
"It was just something completely out of the ordinary. It was a bit of a shock to the system, something I just couldn't understand or really process.
"My experience at the time was quite terrifying."
It was his first experience of the #mentalhealth condition, #psychosis. Luke was 12 years old.
He said it went on from noises to hearing words, hearing his name, to eventually hearing whole sentences "of it almost trying to talk to me". https://www.bbc.com/news/health-45548755

Being #Black and queer with #mentalhealth issues can be a particularly difficult struggle because of this ongoing #stigma, and the only remedy or help that is offered usually comes in the form of prayer. https://www.intomore.com/impact/the-intersectional-struggle-of-being-black-queer-and-having-a-mental-illness #LGBTQ

"As a child, you always think it was your fault," Fonda explained, "because the child can’t #blame the adult, because they depend on the adult for survival. It takes a long time to get over the #guilt." https://www.goodmorningamerica.com/culture/story/jane-fonda-opens-mothers-suicide-affected-57937998 #suicide

I never realized how little I knew about #depression until I became depressed. I didn't know, for instance, how depression can snatch away your sex drive, leaving you feeling newly—and involuntarily—asexual. I didn't know that depression attacks your attention span, your energy, and your ability to finish things. During a recent bout, I had trouble finishing magazine articles and movies. The number of emails I sent plummeted. Everyday errands felt like Herculean tasks.
But perhaps most surprising was the emotional #numbness. https://tonic.vice.com/en_us/article/ne7adg/depression-more-numb-than-sad

My field sorely needs similar conversation and change. Doctors also have high rates of #suicide and it’s a major issue that some of the doctors we turn to for care are often not taking care of themselves. We need to teach help-seeking behaviors in the medical and psychiatric fields. Doctors need the same support and encouragement to get help as their patients. https://www.nami.org/Blogs/NAMI-Blog/September-2018/Reflections-on-Medicine-Shame-and-Stigma #suicideprevention #stigma

Self-care is what feeds your mind, body and spirit. It is setting boundaries, exercising, having a well-balanced diet, journaling, therapy, having healthy relationships, reading books and sleeping. What good is a manicure, pedicure or massage if you are depressed, empty and broken from trauma? https://21ninety.com/how-being-admitted-into-the-psychiatric-unit-made-me-realize-self-care-is-not-just-about-manicures-and-pedicures #selfcare #mentalhealth

Unfortunately, many of us have grieved for loved ones who have believed this lie from the devil – the idea that the only solution to their current circumstances is to end their lives.
It is already so hard to say goodbye to people we love – but #suicide adds another layer of not only sadness but confusion and in a way, we are left to pick up the pieces. http://www.foxnews.com/opinion/2018/09/16/my-two-brothers-killed-themselves-heres-my-advice-to-others-whove-lost-loved-ones-to-suicide.html #suicideprevention #survivor

The study finds three out of five adults across the U.S. had at least one adverse experience in their childhood, such as divorce, a parent's death, physical or emotional abuse, or a family member's incarceration or substance abuse problem. A quarter of adults have at least three such experiences in childhood, which – according to other research — increases their risk for most common chronic diseases, from heart disease and cancer to #depression and #substancebuse. https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2018/09/17/648710859/childhood-trauma-and-its-lifelong-health-effects-more-prevalent-among-minorities #trauma
