I know I know.. All the eyebrows raised with the "why so laaate.. and she watched it NOW!" expressions are justified but I somehow never got around to watching 'The Internship' up until now when it is just me and 'the internship' (and a few other movies) stuck on a plane together with 15 hours to kill some of which I hope to kill working on this review! So here it is, my take on the 2 hour sloppy disaster which just banks on the 'coolness quotient' of a brand everyone wants to be associated with eg. Latest mouth freshener in the market called 'Google Pan masala'!
SO back to what they called a 'movie on Google interns' which has outrageous levels of fiction only when it comes to Google but story, you ask me….hell yeah, Vince Vaughn (also the screenplay writer and our lead protagonist) decided to stay as close to reality portraying the boring lives of real 21 and 40 year olds as is.. Trust me, my uneventful 15 hours sitting in the same place might be more happening!
Ok, much sarcasm aside, honestly, can't take it away from the makers that the movie was an honest attempt to show the world, the wonderland they call 'Google'. I may be being too critical being from the inside when I feel there is much more to show about Google (& googlers) than the free food, the slides at work, eco-bikes, co-workers kissing in public, stalking each other's calendars for dating purposes, making homosexual comments (positive ones but still!), hung-over interns throwing up in office, google dance teacher doubling as a stripper,.. and the list goes on!
Folks, I can at least tell you that a couple of 40-year (or 35) old beings who fake register for an online degree and have years of experience of failing at sales will never be hired as interns (for diversity ONLY) in Google engineering.. oh wait or was it sales or customer support! Pardon my confusion since at Google, they turned into superheroes designing mobile apps, learning html-css, manning Google helpline (for all products together), selling adwords.. along with wooing co-workers in and out of strip-clubs and finding life's meaning watching a Golden gate sunrise all in 1 summer) !
//spoiler alert <begin>
And it doesn't end there, the internship becomes into a full-time job for the bunch of most cliched diverse group I can imagine consisting of a chinese geek whose only aim is to get a job, a well dressed smart Indian virgin, an american geek and our two super heroes Owen 'pretty jerk' Wilson and Vince 'fail at everything' Vaughn.
//spoiler alert <end>
Sorry for giving it all away but if you haven't watched it till now, you probably won't unless you are in a situation like mine :P
All in all, as you guessed, a 1hour 58 min disappointment for me apart from the funky end credits inspired by various google products which i loved (you will too, watch the video below!) and the 2 mins of after-glory of working for a modern day tech-fantasy which people even make movies about !! If nothing, it made my long journey seem shorter and made me more excited for my second trip to the Google Mountain View Campus than the first!!
PS. It's not a crime to drink with your boss at Google just in case you believed the movie and were rethinking your internship/job offer :D #moviereviewsindia #moviereview #theinternship #google
