Conference(s)+Connections  -

The MacIT call for participation is now live!  We're the leading conference for enterprise Mac admins.  This year, MacIT will be held July 14-16 in Santa Clara, California.

As a member of the Advisory Board, I'm especially interested in getting more women to join me on stage.  If you'd like to brainstorm ideas for things that you could present, feel free to email me at nadyne@gmail.com. I'm totally happy to chat about potential ideas, give lots of encouragement and tips for giving a presentation at a conference like this, or anything else you want.  We've been growing the number of women who are on stage, it's still not enough.
MacIT® is the world's premiere event for “Deploying Apple in the Enterprise.” Learn how Fortune 1000, Global 50, and Higher Education and Governmental organizations are addressing the emerging issues of putting iOS and OS X tools to work. Get ahead of emerging “Consumerization of IT” trends, ...

I was going to write a post with this exact title, and apparently based on the same data visualization that I saw yesterday.  Ravi Parikh beat me to it, and listed three excellent ways to lie with data visualization.

With the release of OS X 10.9 (“Mavericks”), Rich Trouton has been very busily scripting away. His latest is a script that creates custom installers for 10.7-10.9, and they'll work on both Fusion and ESXi. It's awesome work, you should check it out. This entry was posted in Fusion, Mac, vSphere.

In the New York Times obituary for Yvonne Brill, she is quoted as saying, “Good husbands are harder to find than good jobs.”  I think she’s got a point, although I think that there’s also a difference of expectation between jobs and husbands (good or otherwise).

Geek Feminism asked "does the sexism in CS ever get better?" I posted a (generally positive) response to the question on my blog. So, to quote from one of the commenters there ...
"this is the trouble that women cause and I therefore try to avoid hiring them for any roles where one requires steady temperament"

This comment is why I always wince when a woman asks this question. Because it truly does get better (and I explain why I think so in my blog post), but morons like this undermine the point.
As ever, it depends on the sexism. Frankly, it also depends on you, too. Sometimes you simply call 'em on it. How you do it depends on the situation and your relationship with those involved. For ...

We could have an interesting argument about whether all deliberate sexism is trolling. "I'm sexist and proud of it!" seems like it's trolling, pretty much regardless of the situation.

Dear FiveThirtyEight: I love you.  You are the only ones doing awesome analyses such as looking at the 381 paintings done by PBS painter Bob Ross and analyzing his work.

I worked on that team ten years after you did (2005-2010), and working the booth at Macworld Expo got better.  There were always some folks came in just because they hated Microsoft, but there were also a lot of people who came in and genuinely thanked us for making it possible for them to be Mac users in a Windows world.
Believe it or not, there was a time when Microsoft dominated and everybody else hated them (only half of which is true now). The Internet in its role as Great Disruptor helped turn that all around, starting in the late 1990s...

+Scott Knaster My time a MacBU preceded and overlapped Nadyne's and I remember it the way she described it. Most of what the interactions I recall were positive.

The most memorable was when Jean-Louis Gassée (who was no longer at Apple at the time) came up to ask a question about Office. He said he was a real MacOffice fan.

"As example and operating philosophy, his notion of serving the music may wind up being of more lasting consequence than any one sonic signature: Ramone engaged each musical assignment on its own terms and sought out what was best for it." - NPR Music's eulogy for Phil Ramone, one of the greatest producers of all time. via http://nadyne.tumblr.com/post/46713069361
