Why Most Salad Dressing is Unhealthy + How to Make Your Own!

Most salad dressings are absolutely LOADED with unhealthy ingredients like sugar, vegetable oils (which cause chronic inflammation), and artificial sweeteners and flavors. Which is super ironic considering we typically eat salad to be healthy and get some veggies in!

My friend Hannah from Healthfully Hannah wrote this fantastic post breaking down the unhealthy ingredients typically found in salad dressings + she gives us an easy formula to make delicious, healthy dressings!
Salad Dressing: it’s probably the last thing you’d suspect to have all sorts of nasty ingredients in it. I mean after all, it’s just salad dressing. If this is what you’re thinking, then keep reading! While it doesn’t really seem like it at first, salad dressing is actually a processed food-like product. If you’re going to be eating a bowl...

The ugly side of the beauty industry!

On the average day, the average woman wears hundreds of chemicals. These chemicals are found in her face wash, face lotion, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, deodorant, perfume, mascara, eye shadow, foundation… and so the list goes on.

The beauty industry is downright ugly. It's almost completely unregulated, and companies are able to use just about any chemical ingredient they wish, and don't even need to disclose them all to us! This is extremely concerning given the fact that a number of commonly used chemicals have been linked to hormone disruption, DNA damage, and even cancer.

How is it that the industry is so broken? And how can we protect ourselves with natural, nontoxic skincare and beauty products?
So you need a new mascara… You run to the local drugstore or big cosmetics store or department store beauty counter. You look for the product that will work the best because, well, no one wants mascara flaked under her eyes by noon! But most of us don’t ever consider the ingredients in our cosmetic products. I for one always thought that...

Homemade and healthy eggnog... YUM!

This homemade and healthy coconut milk eggnog is SO delicious and will surely get you in the holiday spirit!
As we were doing our holiday decorating last week, I got a crazy craving for eggnog. The “OMG I NEED IT NOW OR I’M GOING TO LOSE MY SH*T” type of craving. You know you have them, too. Usually these can be blamed on blood sugar imbalances, but the snow globes and holiday tunes were totally to blame for this one....

DIY all-natural blemish eraser spot treatment... zaps zits fast!!

Wanna know what I hate? ZITS!! I know you feel me. The worst... Luckily thanks to a nutrient-dense diet, much needed gut healing, and my natural skincare routine I don't deal with them nearly as often as I once did. But they still pop up now and again, and for those times I need to be prepared! I made this DIY all-natural herbal spot treatment recently and it's a fast-acting zit zapper.
Nothing ruins a perfectly good morning like noticing that a zit has made a home of your face overnight. Ugh. Go Away! Now while I’ve been able to eliminate 99% of my adult-acne with a properly balanced diet (including a lot of necessary gut healing) and my natural skincare routine, I still get the occasional blemish (typically right before my period). Such...

Homemade and healthy jello recipe.

Jello is such a FUN food... and a classic. But most store-bought jello is filled with unhealthy ingredients. Luckily, making your own is SO easy! Plus it's a great way to get more gelatin into your diet, which has a ton of health and beauty benefits.
J-E-L-L-O. (You totally just sang that, right?) Ooh I just love the jiggle! The cool sensation as it glides over your tongue. The way it reflects light like glass. It's such a FUN food. But most store-bought jello is filled with some pretty nasty ingredients.

3 reasons why counting calories in unhealthy

At one point in my life, I was a compulsive calorie counter. And the name of the game was less is best. Though it definitely sharpened my mental math skills, my obsession with numbers did little to improve my health. In fact, it made me more unhealthy.

Calories ruled the nutrition and weight loss world back when it was believed calories in = calories out. But we now know this concept is incorrect — people do not become overweight simply by eating too much and moving too little. Our bodies, health, weight loss, weight gain, and nutrition are much more complex than that. And in fact, focusing exclusively on calories is unhealthy because it doesn’t take the bigger picture into consideration.
Much like slap bracelets and Tamagotchis, counting calories is so 1995. Calories ruled the nutrition and weight loss world back when it was believed calories in = calories out. But we now know this concept is incorrect — people do not become overweight simply by eating too much and moving too ...

5 critical health benefits of fiber... beyond keeping you regular!

Fiber doesn't exactly have the best street cred... most of us think of cardboard-like food-like "health" products or going to the bathroom more regularly when they think of fiber. Not exactly the most exciting or glamorous associations!

But did you know that fiber is a critical part of your body's detox system? Or could help balance hormones? Or decrease blood sugar levels and inflammation!? Yes, fiber is way more bada** than we give it credit for!

Check out these 5 critical health benefits of fiber.
When you think of dietary fiber… I bet you think of two things: #1: processed diet and “health” food products like breakfast bars and cereals that scream “LOADED WITH FIBER” on the box (and typically aren’t very tasty) #2: yes, just that — a satisfying, solid, dependable number #2 And while fiber certainly does keep us regular and feeling full (which is why it’s...

This homemade and healthy coconut milk made with shredded coconut could not be easier to make! ...or yummy!

Coconut milk is SO easy to make at home and absolutely delicious!

Plus, no nasty additives like carrageenan or unhealthy packaging like BPA-lined cans or cartons.
Coconut milk is an absolutely deee-licious non-dairy alternative. It’s a staple in my kitchen, where I primary use it for chia pudding. Which I’m very into. Yes, I make so much chia pudding that I consider coconut milk a staple. Unfortunately, most store-bought coconut milks are filled with some questionable additives. One of the most offensive: carrageenan. A Little Reminder About...

These homemade and healthy chocolate-covered snowballs (a.k.a. no-bake coconut macaroons) are such a delicious holiday treat!

These homemade and healthy chocolate-covered snowballs (a.k.a. no-bake coconut macaroons) are SO YUMMY! No refined sugar or artificial ingredients.
Since it’s been in the 60s all December… It’s not looking like we’ll be getting a white Christmas. Now since I live in Philadelphia and not Atlanta, this is not normal. It’s been weird to go to tree lightings without a jacket and holiday parties where we spend more time out on the patio instead of near the fireplace. I...

Homemade and healthy gluten-free pie crust recipe... this one's so simple and yummy!!

Nothing says "It's the holidays!" quite like a hot pie, fresh from the oven. Mmmmm!! But I've had a real struggle making a gluten-free pie crust... until now.

Just in time for the holidays!
Nothing says “It’s The Holiday Season!” quite like a hot pie, fresh from the oven. (Except maybe Mariah. OK, definitely Mariah.) But gluten-free baking sometimes doesn’t get the message across quite as clearly… I’ve really struggled with gluten-free baking. Like pulled-my-hair-out, broken-dishes, been-pushed-to-the-point-of-considering-anger-management struggled. I’ve tried mixing SO MANY different types of gluten-free flours and with varied succ...

These homemade and healthy salted "caramel" pecan truffles are a yummy real food dessert! Just three ingredients, they're free of refined sugar, unhealthy fats, gluten, and anything processed.
Do you know the Truffle Shuffle? If yes, we could totally be friends. We could watch The Goonies while we eat these delicious salted “caramel” pecan truffles in honor of our boy Lawrence Cohen (a.k.a. “Chunk”). A whole batch of them… for each of us. truffle-shuffle ...

Even if we are eating the most nutrient-dense foods possible, if we’re not breaking them down adequately enough to actually get to the nutrients they contain… what’s the point?
