The remains of St. Nicholas church on top of the plateau with the same name

St. Nicholas plateau hides the ruins of churches, monasteries, a fortress, and breathtaking views of The Melnik Pyramids. The somewhat difficult hike is totally worth the effort.

The biggest and best-preserved church is St. Nicholas. It’s dated back to the 12th century and was built on the same grounds as an earlier Thracian sanctuary.

Have you been to Melnik, Bulgaria's smallest town?

Sofia, Bulgaria: Where 7,000+ Years Of History Blend In A Vibrant Fusion

The 2nd highest capital in Europe, surrounded by mountain ranges from all sides, with the magnificent Vitosha Mountain watching over her for many centuries, #Sofia is a place like no other.

If you’re searching for a destination which combines modern and antique, stylish and unpleasant, history and contemporary, nightlife and nature, beauty and the beast, you should definitely consider visiting the capital of Bulgaria.

Everything here is multi-layered, multi-cultural, multi-ethnical, and multi-religious. And, not surprisingly, quite colourful and very tolerant.

You’ll shake your head in disbelief, your jaw will drop in awe, your eyes will fill with tears, and your head will spin from the emotional rollercoaster you’re going to experience while walking the streets and visiting the sites of Sofia, Bulgaria.

Find out what expects you in the Bulgarian capital and decide for yourself if you’re ready to handle her.

Hello awesome people,

I was wondering - which one do you prefer: endless sand beaches or rugged cliffs when you're at the seaside?

Share your preference in the comments :)

Cheers,
N.

Sofia City Lights

These are the bunkers I meant when I was telling a fellow traveller about the concrete monsters in the dazzling Bulgarian capital.

This is the view from my balcony at night with the Vitosha Mountain hidden somewhere in the distance, you can only see the lights of the TV Tower at Kopitoto.

Bunkers under Sofia

I was asked today if there were bunkers in Sofia.

I must admit, when I wrote bunkers in a comment to a post, I really meant the concrete communist-era high-rise residential buildings which make the face of #Sofia.

Then I searched for bunkers and this is what I found.

So yes, there are indeed bunkers in Sofia, but I'm not sure I'd want to visit them.

What about you? Would you go on an underground adventure like the young people in the video?

Hello lovely people,

may I ask for your input on my collection about the Bulgarian capital? I'm not a photographer but I still hope to be able to show some of the beauty of this fascinating city :)

Thanks for your time!

This is one of the peculiarities of the Bulgarian capital.

The buildings in the city centre have basements with little windows at the street level. Many of them have been transformed into small shops. They sell cigarettes, alcohol and non-alcohol drinks, snacks, lottery tickets, etc.

Since their little windows are really low, customers have to bend over to place their order and take their purchase. Hence, Sofians call them "klek-shops" (from "klek", meaning "crouch" in Bulgarian).
