so much anger to manage today but my heart aches for this baby who was treated like her life, her safety, her spirit didn't matter at all. #mckinney   #dajerriabecton
i don't usually go outside to cry. to connect with nature, to commune with god, sure. but today was not like any other day. today i struggled to put aside the growing rage in my soul and focus on my days work. today i spent the day remembering all the times i felt terrified by an encounter with ...

this lion can tell her own damn stories because we'd be starving if we ate all the lies they fed #freddiegray   #baltimoreriots  #blacklivesmatter
another day, another death, another funeral, another march, another protest, another militarized attack/response, another news cycle calling black people thugs and criminals, another shouting match on social media, another call for peace, another demand to forget and move on, another day in the ...

my advent prayer or something in honor of sweet baby jesus
you ever have those days when you get all in your feelings and can't seem to find your way out? that describes me perfectly right now! it started with my older brother posting a poem to my late sister-in-law's facebook wall. it's been almost two years but just thinking about her takes me ...

dear high school and college students,
thank you for being revolutionaries.
signed,
a brown woman who loves you
dear high school and college students,. i write this love letter to you as i'm struggling to mend my broken heart. i weep as yet another legal decision ignores evidence of a crime, instead choosing to minimize the value of black and brown lives in this version of america you are soon to inherit.

who's afraid of the big bad no? here's why you shouldn't be afraid to hear the word no!
i was chatting with my friend today on gchat as we tend to do every day and i had an epiphany. i really like epiphanies because they are those elusive ah ha moments that mean something finally clicked in your mind that can be the catalyst for you removing limitations in your thinking, actions, ...

processing my thoughts with this post and video. #ferguson   #blacklivesmatter   #iamamerican
some people cry. some people march. some people throw things. some people scream. some people set things ablaze. some people tear things up. some people hold signs. some people sing. some people paint. some people write. let all the people refuse to be silent. “I contend that the cry of “black ...

i find myself pumping the gospel tracks to minister to the overwhelming grief of lost lives and the burden of black invisibility one minute; and blasting fuck the police and black rage as i choke on the hate-fueled words of bigotry, privilege, and racism soaking up all my air the next. i can’t breathe.
singing ain't my thing. i've said it plenty of times and i'm sure you all know me well enough to take my word for it. that hasn't stopped me from singing, of course, because i completely believe in the healing powers of music. no matter what mood you find yourself in, there is a song that speaks ...

every woman needs to be "that girl" who gets in her car and just drives off into the sunset. just once, get up and go!
have you ever just gotten in your car and driven off into the sunset without an actual plan for where you will end up? do you think you could ever be the kind of person who does that at least once? i fully believe every woman should be “that girl” at least once in her life.

what if you only had anonymity for 15 minutes rather than 15 minutes of fame?
What if Andy Warhol had it wrong, and instead of being famous for 15 minutes, we’re only anonymous for that long? In this short talk, Juan Enriquez looks at the surprisingly permanent effects of digital sharing on our personal privacy. He shares insight from the ancient Greeks to help us deal with our new “digital tattoos.”
