The space shuttle Discovery is suspended from a sling held by twocranes shortly after the NASA 747 Shuttle Carrier Aircraft (SCA) waspushed back from underneath at Washington Dulles InternationalAirport, Thursday, April 19, 2012, in Sterling, VA. Discovery, thefirst orbiter retired from NASA’s shuttle fleet, completed 39missions, spent 365 days in space, orbited the Earth 5,830 times, andtraveled 148,221,675 miles. NASA will transfer Discovery to theNational Air and Space Museum to begin its new mission to commemoratepast achievements in space and to educate and inspire futuregenerations of explorers. Era coming to an end...

quite a vocabulary you have there. must be fun to have a conversation with you

Statistics are wonderful, but dreams and vision are what made NASA the program it is and was. Dreams of colonizing the moon, 2001 space stations, and reusable space ships. The moon being used to go to Mars. Dreams fade and visions die as does the the team that gave us Tang. And Mars seems further away and the dreams are dark. We've given up the final frontier.

Just imagine if all our vehicles had a longevity of just 1% that of the shuttle's distance traveled... That might actually make paying $50,000+ for a nice vehicle feel like a good investment.

148,221,675 miles? What's the trade-in value on that kind of mileage?

its a shame nasa is quiting space ,would have loved to see them get to infinity and beyond

A well deserved retirement!!!

No more American Astronauts...Thanks Obama!

Just something so surreal about this photo.

Spammers should be strapped to a chair and have their heads smashed with hammers in front of their children.

The end of an Era.......thanks for sharing this Beautiful shot

great pic. i hope they bring back the space program eventually.

does somebody have this photo in 1920px resolution? :)

Love the Discovery learning about it in science

whish i were learning your sort of stuff coz my science is no where near as good as yours

Thanks for killing NASA, our space program, and all things that come from it president Obama.

WoWwwwwww.... it's great chance to nlern about discovery..

Fantastic!!! Absolutely amazing.

one of my IMPOSSIBLE dreams..

The 'Discovery' what an achievement and the crews who were involved with the missions!

that a pioneer shuttle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Allot has changed since the challenger explosion in the 80's I remember watching that in class as a child on tv and I didn't really understand what happened till a few years latter allot of people have died trying to find the meaning and explanation of this universe Thanks all that you do NASA | IM NEW ADD ME TO YOUR CIRCLE PLEASE !!!!

ureeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

what's with the lackofspaces in someplaces like that. and also space shuttles are awesome! lol

Orbited earth 5,830 times in 365 days?? That is about 15 times a day!! Is that real?

+Jamie Lin, not those many times in those many days. Just orbited Earth that much AS WELL AS it's TOTAL days spent in orbit is that much.

One orbit every 90 minutes in the typical orbit for the shuttle.

We don't need explorers, you'll always have qualified people willing to go to space. What we really need is engineers and researchers to design and build the equiptment.

It is a good news. I love space story......

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I can empathize. I'm retired too...

+Bolbol Sima, unless it orbited earth some time not in space, the math still not adding up :-). Nonetheless, it is a beautiful pic!

GIVE IT BACK TO HOUSTEN!!! WE BILT IT WE GET TO KEEP IT!!!!!

I like NASA too much and I love it

Kori: It was actually built mostly in California, with other parts being built in other companies, and it was initially delivered to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Houston had nothing to do with it (also it helps if you spell it correctly).

+Kori Mcsweeney which part did you build? Oh, wait, so anybody from Detroit will get my truck, because Ford was based in Detroit? It seems to me, that it was NASA owned (a federal agency) and they gave them to Museums so that we (all visitors to each of the areas) can visit them. Discovery, by the way, was given to Smithsonian Institute, which offers public entry at no cost. You are welcome to see Discovery for free anytime you are in the DC area.

You can't have it because you can't spell built. So we
don't want you to hurt yourself. Sorry

Good bye Discovery Space Shuttle :(

The people are GREATE who contributed their honest efforts behind it.

Great! The project should go on and on!

hallo ... my name nanang yahya, I am from indonesia

lets go to mars..................................haaa

It figures, leave your space shuttle parked at the airport overnight and they tow it off! :p

Simply amazing. It is so sad my dream since I was a child was to go see a launch at the Cape and that will never happen. So sad.

it can still happen if we get a goverment that believes in America

wooow amazing picture.....so coool!!!!

Sad, but the private sector has big plans for outer space.

So cool! Looking forward in seeing this in June on our VA trip.

Awesome. Imagine being aboard at a liftoff...nothing can compare

it is time for a new spaceship i think soon we will hear about that the technologies coming every day

This is really a great shot..

THEY don't benefit from space exploration so THEY decided to stop those explorations. Shame on those, who don't want to see anything beyond the money!

When i was in 3rd grade and had basic geometry, I saw the first drawings of the space shuttle, and I tried to apply my basic math to find out the launch weight. My uncle taught me about densities, and I was fascinated by the idea of "liquid oxygen".
When time came for physics class, i finally started to understand some of the material compositions, heat transmission properties of ceramics etc.
I used my school trigonometry to try and calculate orbits and escape velocity.

My first ascii computer art was a space shuttle taking off, motivating me to learn "programming" to animate the takeoff. On a ZX-81 computer.
My first "real" Computer program was a "moon landing" simulator.

When I came to the USA the first time, it was to visit Florida, and the space museum.

This is what made me who I am today.

I am close to tears.

And then, i get angry and think about what today's 3rd graders have to dream about and aspire to.

what was the shuttle they already had at the udvar hasey air museum near d.c.

how much additional drag does the shuttle create and how were the airplane engines boosted to accommodate for that?

I am sad to see this because it means we have no way of sending folks into Space at the moment.

A space ship so unique the chinese copy " SHENGLONG" and the russian copy"BURAN" look so much the same. (>.<)

I love nasa wonderful I wish I could be on trip with nasa

I'm really glad Discovery is going to be on public display, quite fitting.

cool who ever follows me is my friend

IN MY WAY IT IS MENT TO BE FLYED IN THE OUTER SPACE BUT THEY ARE PLAYING WITH IT RIGHT

i wish one day i can see the shuttle myself.

I WISH THAT GOD CAN ENABLE ME TO SEE SUCH A THING.

i am sad because i have not had a shuttle launch when i was alive

I don't know why some americans are so sad about this. This program ate a lot of your tax payer money, the rockets were extremely unefficient and you got bigger problems down on Earth. It had its value, but perhaps you can come up with better and cheaper ways to go to space now? Let that era go...

Pretty crazy looking forward to the new ships

This is awesome, I can't wait to see it. .

Omg that was soo cool I saw it in Washington dc sooo cool

Can't see what they do to replace it! This is always an inspiration to me and reminds me that great things still happen in this world!

That picture looks sketchy. Like a crane might tip over and ruin millions (billions?) of dollars.

Rest in peace. And welcome to new aircraft generation.

Wow what a powerful machine,it like it carring a toi

this is when the future starts, flying cars this world is advancing in technology every minute

it's a shame funding was cut on this program

WHY IS AMERICA SO EPIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is that the one that was on top of that air plane?

I know, it stinks that NASA shut down the space program. I heard from somebody that NASA might be planning commercial flights to the moon!

and nothing fully replaces it

sweet$$$$$$:)

niccccccccccccccccccccccccccceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is an amazing feat.... now if only NASA would stop photoshopping all their images of space (especially the moon).

Houston should've had ONE shuttle to display at #JohnsonSpaceCenter ... just saying.

it would be very unfourtunate if that crane broke. o.0

That's some strong fishing line...

To day I have seen the shuttle at the televisiion I am impresst about the many returns that shuttle has managed together with the astronauts !!!

I am scare of hights and in no way in hell i am going into space. its going to be a long drop down you going to die before!! you hit the ground.

That spaceship is GIGANTIC!!
I bet 1,000 people can fit in there.

Still not sure why a shuttle did not go to the Air Force Museum for their space exhibit. A real shame.

wowwow!!!!
so intresting yaar.......:)

The birth of true space missions started with NASA ,.But that old beauty will be sadly missed, take loan build a new series only AMERICA CAN.JOHN ONEILL.

wow amazing"how high tech the world today

Come on NASA! We expect the new space program!

ever since i was 5 i wanted to e an astronaut, then i heard about 1: the training and 2: the explosion of one of the shuttles

They should find a way to display it suspended!

I will make the biggest challenge with astronomers all over the world?
If in discovering any errors. Or? Does not explain a lot of misinformation about the solar system?
I will burning the Quran on the YouTube channel? And secondly
: I'll leave Islam to atheism? And I will confess that there is no Muhammad and Islam, there is no
Would be the first hostile to Islam in the world? I will write the following on a chest? I am stupid man in the world in space science and the universe?
All of this you will see on the video?
In return? I want NASA scientists and astronomers in all of Europe, Russia, Japan and China. To do what I will do the same? If proved and offered clarification on the video and the laws that I've found to explain the greatest discovery of the solar system?
And explain what they were unable to explain all operations in connection with all the discoveries? It is to call her mother for all the theories? Even in the science of the nucleus. And gravity. And nuclear fusion?
Do something before it destroyed myth of the twentieth century scientists in front of people? They trust the American scientists
Let's start with the scientific battle between me and your scientists?
Are those who challenge me? Trust in my words I want you to understand even understand the science of space as I will teach him to succeed on the Internet in the future

Nothing imposible.........
Try and Try then success ........

amezing .what a brainy fellows are there?simply superb

ES IMPRESIONANTE PENSAR SOLO EN EL HECHO DE HABER SALIDO AL ESPACIO Y HABER REALIZADO LAS 39 MISIONES EN FORMA EXITOSAS. TAL VEZ EN MI "PROXIMA" VIDA PUEDA LLEGAR A SER UNO LOS QUE PUEDA REALIZAR VUELOS EN ALGUNA DE LAS FUTURAS NAVES QUE VIAJEN AL ESPACIO. ES UN MUY BUEN LUGAR PARA QUE SEA VISITADO Y CONOCIDO POR LAS FUTURAS GENERACIONES.
