Here's a style of pitch for SEO work that has the smell of rat all over it.

Recently, I discovered “New Zealand’s leading SEO company” (their own words) had been showing their prospective clients some really interesting keyword research data from the Google Adwords Keyword Planner. For those of you not familiar with this tool, it’s the industry standard #1 place for most SEO operators to get real-life search data to work off. The tool allows you to measure rate of occurrence of words and phrases you already know about, but it also provides many examples of words and phrases closely related to what you do which you might not yet have your website optimised for. It’s an awesome tool and one I would find difficult to do my job without.

It was great to see they were using the Google Adwords Keyword Planner to advise their clients, until I looked a little more closely at their report. Here’s an example of the kind of thing I saw. It’s not the exact report, but you’ll get the idea.

10 Common SEO Mistakes

Here's a list of the 10 most common mistakes I've seen business owners make when it comes to assessing their Google organic rank (SEO) strategy.

1. Being complacent. Competitors are always working toward toppling your organic position, whether that is 1st or 5th, or 10th. Doing nothing will progressively erode any advantage.
2. Failing to create enough quality content. Websites with little content – or less content than competitors typically don’t get as much organic traffic, (more here:
3. Failing to engage in social channels citing that they are too time consuming. Social is a goldmine for lead source, brand awareness and brand loyalty and all of these have a spin-off for organic rank.
4. Failing to leverage multiple digital and offline touch-points. Brand awareness is a great foundation for organic CTR from search - which in itself is a signal for rank.
5. Not aligning SEO and Adwords campaigns into a holistic strategy. These two work best if managed into a singe umbrella strategy to compliment each other. All too often I see paid campaigns that are at odds with the organic positioning, or organic implementation that makes paid campaigns more expensive or less effective.
6. Weighing design over function. First and foremost, a website must perform a business function, which is seldom design, unless the business is about design.
7. Doing SEO work based on some reading or basic DIY course, (more here: It takes years of full-time dedication to become an expert in this field. Many ‘experts’ are born after reading a few articles on the topic. After 4 years at this, I am still learning it myself.
8. Relying on a web developer to implement SEO. These are two very different specialities and seldom cross over. Even expert web developers are typically not able to implement essential SEO strategies. If you hired a web developer, ensure that an SEO specialist is doing the SEO part of the work.
9. Trying to measure and plan SEO work by way of Google Analytics. SEO is determined on Google’s website – which requires specific analytics about Google's website, and this is only available through Google Search Console, (more here: ).
10. Relying on overseas cut-price services by agencies that don’t understand the demographic, the local market, and are often unable to write well in English. Hire locally.

Dodgy Black Hat SEO - The AfterBurner©

The AfterBurner© is a technique where the Black Hat SEO company buys up expired domain names and then uses them to host backlinks to their clients’ websites. It's in-genuine, steals peoples' good-will, rides on the reputation that others have earned and is dodgy as heck, but dammit, it still works.

Will Google be able to pick up on this and kill it off?

We'll have to wait and see... (I think: YES! Wahahahahahaha!!)

PS. In case it wasn't obvious: I don't use this technique, and perhaps my SEO work isn't as awesome as it could be because of it, but mine won't get a penalty for my clients' websites for using this dodgy technique in near the future.

Meet some of the core elements of the current Google Search Algorithm. "Where's RankBrain?" I hear many of you smart SEO people ask. Well, here's my view:

RankBrain is Google's new AI learning engine attached to the algorithm and tasked with tuning it based on desired outcomes. It was announced by official Google representative, Gary Illyes, as being the third most influential part of SEO and rank, behind Content and Links. I think this has lead to likely misinterpretation by many.

To me, that isn't part of the algorithm at all, it's simply the test platform to monitor and adjust the algorithm. It doesn't actually make live rank position decisions itself. RankBrain dispenses with a number of human operators that in the past would have had to monitor and adjust via a much more manual and delayed process. Google probably made those people redundant, or perhaps occupied them on much more fun tasks like making self-driving cars...

I've spent many many hours thinking over how the algorithm works, and what sorts of decisions are being made to place any given web page where it is in search.

Beginner's Guide to Google Analytics

Analytics is a powerful piece of reporting software that is installed into your website. When a visitor arrives at your website, the software signals Google HQ (or wherever the data collection system for your Analytics account is stored) to say “here’s a visitor – we’ll update you with what this visitor does while here”, and obediently this software monitors the visitor’s every move on your site. For some visits, a visitor leaves soon after arriving. During other visits, a visitor navigates through a few of your pages, perhaps watches a video, fills in a form and then leaves. If your website has eCommerce, and Analytics is correctly configured to track eCommerce transactions, you may also get a report from Analytics as to what they bought, and how much it cost - which you can connect up with a particular lead source or marketing initiative.

This is Powerful Business Data.

When a new visitor comes to the site a digital ‘handover’ occurs that tells Analytics some information on where the visitors came from too. That also implies that if you sold something on your website you can attribute that sale to a particular source, entry point or type of visitor. Great information for making decisions about whether the business mechanics of your website is actually working.

Relying on Google Analytics to get all of your SEO insights is like putting on a concert, watching some people wander in off the street, but wondering "where is everyone else?", meantime what you really did was you forgot to sell the tickets...

Google’s Search Console is without a doubt my top go-to SEO tool to use when analysing my website’s search performance. Why? Because it reflects actual stats of what is happening in Google search in relation to my website. Nothing else does this.

It’s an invaluable data source that is available to anyone who owns or has admin control of a website. The data is shared by Google, and costs nothing to connect to. Having lots going on in Google search doesn’t guarantee that it’s any good. It doesn’t mean you are getting good web traffic referrals and it doesn’t mean your website is converting visits into business. The Google Search Console data is just the start of the story, but it is a significant one. What I want to share with you on this page is the many features currently in Search Console, and hope you can read or interpret the data those features provide.
