Today I met a prestigious businessman while I was out at lunch.
This man really seemed to be put together. Then he passes me his business card. I have to look at his logo four times before discovering that the blue goat sitting on top of the “L” was just the designers’ way of uniquely dotting the “i”.

The kerning was poor, which made one word look like two. If that wasn’t bad enough, the entire image was surrounded by a dreadful, dark drop shadow. Everything that this man represented was supposed to be displayed on this card, and all I could see was this badly designed piece of paper.

A search engine trick by some seos is to manipulate the search bots by loading the page with keywords and phrases — but then hiding them from the viewer because they’re not relevant to the visitor.

From student to designer: Understanding oneself

The transition from a college to a studio environment is a huge jump for new design graduates. The fictitious character of the client for class briefs becomes a very real factor in the design process, and initially for most, it can be quite a hamper on one’s creativity.

Are you using your teenage daughter’s Facebook to get the word out? Are you hounding your staff about Tweeting on the job? Was your website built by your sisters son’s best friend’s cousin? Don’t just play Mafia Wars or Retweet because he’s your buddy. Use the tools for a purpose.

Many businesses up to date with social media have themselves a fancy business page. Your business page may consist of a cool cover photo with a logo for a profile picture and albums with photos, work samples, employees, contact info and the like. But is all this information really getting through to your target market?

Often we see supplied text that has been incorrectly set for print and the web. Most graphic designers are aware of ‘proper’ practices with the use of such items as ‘smart quotes’ and apostrophes, as well as em and en dashes. See the sample below for the correct settings. One of the major problems is the receipt of manuscripts with double spaces. Most desktop applications have tools that work out these kinks, but not so for websites.

A study by Backbaud indicates that despite limited budgets, nonprofits are able to find value using social media networks.
