I, Google

With Hummingbird coming out we're seeing a shift towards a more semantic web, a smarter internet. We can no longer see which keywords bring people to our sites. Where is this all going? +David Amerland  talked about it in his book on Semantic Search (which is awesome, go read!) and I can’t help but nod at the conclusions that are being drawn.

We are required to deliver a higher level of quality content and interaction with our customers and social media if we want to be on top. In a way the etiquette is evolving, we are all in a way forced to treat each other and our clients better. We want them to like us, we want good ratings and recommendations. We want people to talk about us in a positive way. Cheap SEO tricks are a thing of the past.

But what about SEA, what about Google Adwords? I think it will become more important, as you can still measure which keywords are effective and how to make the most of them. Are there going to be changes here too when it’s Google’s big moneymaker?

I for one am excited by these developments. In a way Google is making a better online world. It’s more rewarding to be good at what you do and show it instead of just having a bigger bag of tricks. I recognized this sense of community in Google+ already and I hope it will be carried over to the rest of the internet.

I do have some worries about Google being so dominant in the online world, it’s getting to a point where we’re no longer browsing the web, but just browsing Google. They have tremendous power and authority. They tell us what to do and how to do it and we can either go along with it or get left behind.

What are your thoughts on this? Do you think these developments are positive and do you share a sense of worry like I do?
