The Image That Changed Everything

A simple gesture of a friend offering me a try his 10 stop neutral density filter, change the way I thought what was possible to create as a photographer. Up until then I was just getting the correct manual exposure for each image and making sure I had a good composition. Now I was introduced to creative exposures and fell in love all over again

International Fleet Review, Sydney 2013

Going through my archives looking for more Sydney Landscape images I found this. A sombre moment just before the fireworks started commemorating the 100th anniversary of the entry of the first Royal Australian Navy fleet in Sydney Harbour, on 4th October 1913.

London Eye, On Top Of The World

June 2014

Bucket List - London Eye. Now completed.

I had to press the lens hood flush up onto the glass to reduce the glare from the window and then a few clone stamps in #PerfectPhotoSuite8  to complete the task. If I had my Lens Skirt attached to the window and lens, which blocks the glare, I wouldn't have had this problem but it arrived a few days after we left for our 3 month holiday :(

London Icons

www.MykalHall.photography

June 2014

An iconic image of London in the rain however I use a little creative inspiration from the only 2 rain drops that glowed as they passed by the lamp post. Instinctively I reached for the healing brush to remove them, wishing there were more rain drops to complete this image.  Once they were gone I just knew I had to have them back again but with more. So while searching my favourite photo editing package, #On1 #PerfectPhotoSuite , I found a texture blend of rain which I could adjust the opacity. As luck would have it the rain was falling in the same direction as the "fake" rain.

March 2012.

As David duChemin says "Gear is good, but vision is better".

After a non event sunrise, not a cloud in the sky, our group started the long walk back to the headland over the low tide rock shelf. Looking back I noticed the sunlight bouncing off the wet rocks and water. I thought If I got down low enough it would make an interesting image and pulled out the then current iPhone 4 and captured this. I then processed it using Aperture with a heavy sepia tone.

Oh if you don't know who David duChemin is check out his website www.craftandvision.com and also his YouTube channel Craft & Vision.

As story from May 2014

#OlympusInspired  Shooting this scene handheld could only be done confidently with the Olympus OMD with 5 axis image stabilisation. There would be no way I could have achieved this with my Nikon D7000 without introducing too much noise and loosing details correcting that noise.

I love my Olympus OMD EM1 with the 12mm f2 Oly lens as it was my low light team that I called on for so many of my night shots without a tripod while traveling Europe for 3 months. I did have a tripod with me but didn't require it that often. Now that the new Olympus EM5 mkII has been released I can see the tripod only being used when capturing those 40Mp images when desired. Having the ability to switch from 16Mp to 40Mp and back again is a game changer for me, then being able to shoot COMFORTABLY at 1sec handheld brings a smile to my face. I have heard that someone achieved a 4SEC HANDHELD shot with the OMD EM5 mkII. Now that's got to send a shudder down the spine of all tripod manufacturers. Maybe I should start investing in small portable photography stools.  :)))

I would like to thank +FUJIFILM Australia , +MindShiftGear  and +Think Tank Photo for sponsoring the evening. Thank you to all my fellow supporters for help coordinating the event and most importantly the participants who turned up on the day. I hope you enjoyed yourselves, learnt new techniques and made new friends and contacts. Without you there would be no event.

See you next time. :)

As if you couldn't visit Paris and not take a shot of this icon. We just happened to do it a midnight, tripod free handheld with the +Olympus OMD EM1 with 12mm f2 lens. Having not to worry about image stabilisation at night is so much more enjoyable while on holidays. The last thing you want is to lug around a tripod to draw attention to you.
