Back in the days, SLR lenses came with physical controls for setting aperture. Setting aperture is not as simple as moving the dial, though. Apparently, you'd focus the lens with the aperture wide open and then "stop the aperture down" right before shooting. Since this is a two-step process, there are two dials. Turning the dial with f stops marked doesn't really change the aperture. The other dial, the one with no markings, physically controls the aperture. (More here: http://m.instructables.com/id/M42-Lens-Aperture-Control-on-Modern-DSLRs/)

Did you know that f/16 was twice as wide as f/22? Likewise f/8 is twice as wide as f/11. The physical dial makes this unintuitive numbering clear, though. Distance between 5.6 and 4 is half as much as between 4 and 2.8.

This is extremely accurate, but makes me realize just how much we aussies add 'ie' or 'y' to every word.

John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich is said to have invented sandwiches.

The story goes, Lord Sandwich spent quite a bit of time at gambling tables playing games. He wasn't keen on leaving the table to eat. So he ordered to bring his meat between two breads so he can eat at his desk without having to put playing cards down. (A less popular version of the story says he invented sandwiches so he can keep eat at his work table.)

I started cycling to work sometime in 2014. July 2014, I think. The commute is approximately 10km (about 6 miles) one way. After the initial enthusiasm faded away, riding 10km was not really easy. By the time I arrive at work, I’d be short on breath. I’d run to the pantry (micro-kitchen as we call it) and grab anything that looks edible.

There have been times when I wanted to give up cycling altogether. Sitting inside the car is so comfortable, after all. But somehow I kept it going. One or two days every week, I was cycling to work.

A year later, I continue to cycle to work once or twice a week. It’ll be nice to cycle more often, but I am happy with how far I have come. When I arrived at work today after cycling for 10km, I wasn’t even thirsty. I didn’t want snacks, nor did I want coffee. I just put my bag down and started to work. I know things will improve further as time goes by, but I am satisfied with the progress so far.

We arrived late for lunch buffet. Some desserts were almost gone. But the food that they did have was all good. Especially naan, chana masala, and briyani. Curd rice was not good. Overall, a good lunch we had.

Authentic Tamil Nadu style parotta salna. This is the only place outside Tamil Nadu where I can find it. I'd come here just for that. The place is modest, and is part of Saravana Stores. Ambiance is not great, but the food is good.

Tasty food and a great service. This is the best service I have received in Hawaii so far (in my admittedly short trip).
