Philosophy of Mind

I started out to explain the meaning of Philosophy of Mind (POM) and found it is a very complex issue. As a result, I decided to present two posts.  The first will deal with a basic description and definition, while the second will delve deeper for a better understanding.

Words can be ambiguous and commonly misunderstood or misused. Therefore I will start with philosophy (love of wisdom).  It is not about asking ‘cool’ questions based on personal preferences of feelings or simple personal thoughts and theories.  E.g. open ended and ill defined queries, simple generalized statements followed by multiple disparate inquiries. On the other hand, there are no stupid questions. Yet some questions reveal much about the person asking. Philosophy is a critical and comprehensive method of thought to understand ourselves, the world, and their relationships.  http://www.muhlenberg.edu/main/academics/philosophy/what.html  Therefore, one should analyze, clarify, and evaluate the significance of a question before presenting it.

My next step is to describe mind. I consider this another ambiguous term because a problem arises between the basic definitions and different theories of ‘what is mind’. For now I will use a very basic description: The part of you that thinks, knows, remembers, and feels things and also deals with the ability to understand things. http://www.macmillandictionary.com/us/thesaurus/american/mind#mind_5   I used this link with the thesaurus to make my next point that the description of mind can also be affiliated with the brain. This has given rise to dualism, materialism and behaviorism theories in the philosophical and scientific (usually psychology) world. However, I will stay with the basic description for now.

If we view philosophy as a whole and the 5 main branches as the parts, then POM is one part of the parts.  Encyclopedia Britannica describes POM as; a reflection on the nature of mental phenomena and the relation of the mind to the body and the physical world. Therefore, the central issue is the mind-body problem which includes; the nature of cognitive thought, mental processes, sensory experience, perception, and consciousness. Consciousness is another ambiguous term; http://www.informationisbeautiful.net/play/what-is-consciousness/ .   Consciousness is basically a state of being aware and not to be confused with conscience (right and wrong).

Consequently, in essence, Philosophy of Mind is a part of one or more branches of philosophy along with science that seeks to understand the nature of the mind, brain, and its relationship to the body and physical world. I would like to add that mind is a concept and although brain has mass, we understand very little on how it works. Therefore, I have used an Eastern philosophical approach and included brain with mind instead of the physical world.  http://podcasts.ox.ac.uk/series/romp-through-philosophy-mind
