Struggle for Recovery:
Women's Stories from Northern Uganda
Filmmaker Tim Ouillette and his 13-year-old daughter embarked on a 21-day journey to interview women who had been affected by the war in northern Uganda. “Struggle for Recovery” was filmed in the summer of 2016, and was supported by research from the Feinstein International Center.
Women’s lives in northern Uganda have been shaped by decades of violence and armed conflict, most recently in the over 20-year war between the government of Uganda and the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). The war in Uganda stopped a decade ago, but the effects of the war continue to reverberate in the lives of women whose family members were disappeared by the LRA and never returned, who were abducted and forced to bear the children of the rebels, and who carry the wounds of war.
These women’s stories reveal that economic and societal recovery remains elusive for many people in northern Uganda. Women in northern Uganda continue to struggle to recover in a region where over half the population lives in poverty (double the rates of other parts of the country), and health, education and living standards are on par with war-torn Somalia. Their stories illuminate what continues to hold them back, and what must be transformed for northern Uganda to move forward.
