Mars might have liquid water

The perchlorate found in the soil lowers the freezing point and hence the water does not freeze into ice but stays in liquid state and is also very salty.

#space   #mars   #water   #curiosity
Researchers have long known that there is water in the form of ice on Mars. Now, new research from NASA's Mars rover Curiosity shows that it is possible that there is liquid water close to the surface of Mars. The explanation is that the substance perchlorate has been found in the soil, which lowers ...

Researchers discovered a way to create a cheap and efficient hydrogen fuel

Virginia Tech researchers have devised a biological method using corn stalks, cobs, and husks to create hydrogen fuel.

#science   #hydrogen
A team of Virginia Tech researchers has discovered a way to create hydrogen fuel using a biological method that greatly reduces the time and money it takes to produce the zero-emissions fuel. This method uses abundantly available corn stover - the stalks, cobs, and husks - to produce the hydrogen.

This not a solution, by it's self. It is just a step in the right direction.

The easiest way to sequester carbon with current technology would be to reforest open areas. A tree is 90% carbon, all of which it takes from the air. If we replant the abandoned farmlands and logged areas, 50 years from now astonishing amounts of carbon would be locked in those trees.

We even know it works: when small pox wiped out 90% of the native Americans in North America, they stopped clearing land for their vast agricultural plots. Shortly there after we experienced the "little ice age", due to the large amount of carbon that was taken up.

We could do it again (minus the massive plague) by purposely planting billions of trees.

We automated making everything from cars to cell phones, we can automate this. There are even companies already working on it, such as Bio Carbon Engineering, the Plant a Billion campaign, and the Green Wall of China project, to name a few.

That something so simple could help is not even surprising. The cause of the problem was equally simple: we burned a lot of carbon over hundreds of years.

So, interestingly, our best hope for getting the carbon out of the air has little to do with new technology, and more to do with how many trees we decided to plant.

Personally I have planted 7. It is a tiny number, but is a start. 7 times the population of a city would equal a lot of trees. A man in India planted over a thousand acres by hand, alone.

If we all pitch in, there is reason for hope.

Cheers!

What about power density? The problems with lithium-ion batteries are well known for a long time now, but they are far less bulky than most alternatives. In my eyes that always was the reason why they are that widespread - unless we want to get back to briefcase phones?

My Experiments:
  • Have done an Arduino program which interfaces with my Linux System and receives infrared signals from a Sony TV remote to control the system.
  • Have created an Arduino sketch that automatically senses the surrounding luminosity using an LDR and adjusts the brightness of the LED. It lights bright when the surrounding is dimmer and vice versa.
  • Have created a blog about Scouting and made a complete UI makeover to make it a responsive site under all device resolutions.
  • Have created a nifty script (Shell) to instantly convert pictures of all formats into the Open Webp format which is 40% lesser in size with the same quality.
  • Am creating a motion sensing web camera, that tracks my gestures to perform tasks in my computer using the Open Computer Vision library (OpenCV)
  • Am practicing Blindfold Speedcubing and One Handed Solving with my Dayan Zhanchi.
  • Have successfully cracked a WEP Wireless Network with AirCrack-ng tools.
  • Have Reverse-tethered Android Phone to laptop using bluetooth.
