Keep your child is safe and make sure the car seat you purchase is designed to fit your child’s current size and age. And before putting your child in a car seat, read the manufacturer’s instructions so you know how the seat works.

Did you know that every 33 seconds a child under 13 is involved in a car crash in the United States? That can be a pretty scary thought—and will probably (hopefully) get you thinking about making sure your child is safely snuggled into a car seat every time you head out to school, the grocery …

Every year, backpacks contribute to between 14,000 and 22,000 dislocations, fractures, sprains, strains, and other injuries, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Encourage teachers and school administrators to switch to electronic books. And check your child’s equipment, form, and technique.

Dear Mr. Dad: My 13-year-old son’s backpack weighs a ton (actually, 25 pounds, but it feels like a ton), and I’m afraid he’s going to hurt himself hauling it around. You’ve talked about the dangers of overloaded packs before, but as far as I can tell, backpacks don’t seem to be getting any smaller. I …

On our most recent podcast, I sat down with William Miller, author of The Microcosm Within. What is “herd immunity” and how is it saving your life? Why people refuse vaccines and expose their children to certain dangers?

There’s no question that fathers are vital to child rearing. In Throwaway Dads, Armin Brott and Ross Parke explore the myth that fathers are not nearly as important as mothers to the family.

When childproofing, we tend to spend most of our time and efforts in the living room, kitchen, and bedrooms—where babies spend most of their time. But don’t forget about other areas. Every year, thousands of babies who are simply on a quest to learn more about their world, gain access to liquid laundry packets for example, and put them in their mouth.

Babies are hard-wired to explore—and that’s a good thing. By exploring, babies learn about their world: how objects move, their textures, what sounds they make when they’re dropped or thrown or squished, how they respond to getting poked or prodded, and how they look from different angles. Oh, and let’s not forget how they taste. …

Nobody knows dads like Mr. Dad
Introduction
Being a dad comes first. Always. But for the last 15 years or so, I've devoted my career to giving men (and those who love them) the tools, support, resources, and knowledge they need to be the dads they want to be--and their family needs them to be.

I'm the author of eight bestselling books on fatherhood, covering everything from pregnancy and infancy to toddlers, school-age kids, and even teens. Titles include The Expectant Father, The New Father: A Dad's Guide to the First Year, and The Military Father: A Hands-on Guide for Deployed Dads. I write two nationally syndicated newspaper columns, "Ask Mr. Dad" and "Parents@Play," and host two parenting radio shows. "Positive Parenting" airs on a dozen stations in the US, and "Positive Parenting for Military Families" airs on the American Forces Network where it reaches more than 2 million American servicemembers and their families on 500+ stations in 177 countries. Oh, and I guess I shouldn't forget about my blog and website, mrdad.com

Whew. Besides all that, I do a lot of work on men's health issues and edit a popular blog, Talking About Men's Health.
