The end of movie theaters?
Netflix announced their first original film production, a sequel to the Oscar-winning 'Crouching Tiger - Hidden Dragon'. Another movie, 'The Ridiculous Six', a western spoof starring Adam Sandler won't be released in cinemas at all - and is the first of four stream-only movies scheduled with Sandler.
With billions at their disposal, internet giants can buy and produce original, high-quality content and decide where and how it is viewed. Ushering in a day when a movie's debut will be world-wide on all digital platforms. Netflix stated, "The current practice of delaying the release of films on home entertainment platforms until several weeks or months after they have appeared in cinemas, called the 'theatrical window', will no longer be the norm. Movies will be more profitable when they debut on-line simultaneously with their conventional cinema release."
