Using Page Scrolling as Engagement Indicator

Many news and blog sites who are justifiably trying to measure their user's engagement look primarily at returning visits, clicks, and time on site metrics. Although these metrics are good, I have a better idea.

Why not measure the scrolling people do? Let's look at average maximum position people get in our pages, let's look at pages that entice users to scroll down more and more. I even suggest looking at the speed people scroll. For example, I've noticed people scroll at lightning speed when they are on facebook. It's because they are getting a lot of useless junk on their feed...

I think that for news sites in particular this can be the best engagement and quality metric possible.

I'm implementing this method on a news site I'm maintaining (http://www.radicalislam.org/) . I will report back with the results...
