Thought a little about the #HTC #Ocean rumour and I'm finding i can't really get excited about the device. Mostly this is about #Edge #Sense. It seems like a fun feature but mostly in a this feels like the future gimmicky kind of way. I honestly can't see a situation where it really could change or improve that much based on what's been seen so far.

As far as control features such as being able to increase or decrease volume or scrub through a video, it just seems unnecessary. I've personally never thought the current methods were a problem and I think most would say the same. It would be cool to have but unless it works as reliably as current methods it's not going to work. I'll come back to that in a bit.

The more interesting use for this, I think, is more about giving the phone awareness of how it's being held. Screen auto-rotation doesn't always work as we would like or expect, which is frustrating. This could help solve that issue but we come back to the question of reliability. Not just to work when we expect it to and how we expect it to, but also to be able to recognise and ignore actions that were unintended.

I have disabled the #Motion #Gesture feature on my HTC #10. Why? I simply couldn't be bothered to deal with it anymore. They gestures didn't work well when I did try to make use of them but more annoyingly they would get triggered all the time in my pocket, when I definitely didn't need or want them to.

In some ways Edge Sense reminds me of the curved edge displays on some #Samsung models. They added features to specifically make use of the curved edges, but beyond whether or not those features were useful or not, the design came with its own issues. Palm rejection seems to be a major problem with those devices still.

Edge Sense need to excel and knowing when not to get triggered in order to make sense for people to keep using. For the screen rotation feature it would make sense to have an eye scanning feature similar to what Samsung had to ensure the correct action occurs. (How you hold a phone when it's portrait/landscape is different when your upright vs lying on a bed for example.)
How would it respond in a social setting when someones just turning the phone for someone to the display. If edge sense relies on grip then these things need to be factored in.

Lastly it shouldn't need a learning curve. Best case scenario, you would just handle the phone the way you normally would and it would figure out what you needed. Having to learn a new whole new way to interact with your phone for just one feature doesn't tend to work out. Especially if that feature isn't wide spread.

I'd be really interested to see how well the features work and how deep/rich the uses for the Edge Sense feature are. Hoping that they go beyond the things I've thought of which remind me of things that have come and not really picked up, the edge features on select Samsung devices, Force Touch on the iPhone etc.

Here's hoping for a pleasant surprise.
