Today the world lost one of the true giants of the past century. Nelson Mandela was a man of incomparable honor, unconquerable strength, and unyielding resolve---a saint to many, a hero to all who treasure liberty, freedom and the dignity of humankind. As we remember his triumphs, let us, in his memory, not just reflect on how far we've come, but on how far we have to go. Madiba may no longer be with us, but his journey continues on with me and with all of us.

Watch the SEASON FINALE of Through The Wormhole With Morgan Freeman - TONIGHT at 10pm E/P on The Science Channel!

Is life the product of evolution? Or is it thanks to the guiding hand of God? Believers in Intelligent Design argue complex life could not have evolved randomly. One evolutionary scientist is filling in the gaps in the fossil record by bringing extinct creatures back to life as robots. An engineer has discovered a single pattern that appears throughout the entire universe. Could this pattern be the mark of a designer? And is the existence of a “moral molecule” in our brains a sign that God created humanity? Was life created by evolution? By God? Or both?

Do we live in the “real world,” or is it all in our minds? Our basic assumptions about life and the universe may be false. Is nothing certain? Or IS REALITY REAL? Find out TONIGHT at 10pm on The Science Channel!

Film and Television Actor and Director
Introduction
With an authoritative voice and calm demeanor, this ever popular African American actor has grown into one of the most respected figures in modern US cinema. Born in June 1937 in Memphis, Tennessee, the young Freeman attended Los Angeles Community College before serving several years in the US Air Force as a mechanic between 1955 and 1959. His first dramatic arts exposure was on the stage and he appeared in an off-Broadway production of "The Nigger Lovers" and also in an all-African American production of the exuberant musical Hello, Dolly! (1969). Freeman first appeared on TV as a series of characters on the Children’s Television Workshop classic, The Electric Company. After several years Freeman made the jump to the big screen with memorable performances in Coriolanus (1979), Attica (1980), Brubaker (1980), Eyewitness (1981), and Death of a Prophet (1981).

However, it would be Freeman’s powerful turn as pimp Fast Black in Street Smart (1987) opposite Christopher Reeve that made Hollywood take notice and landed him his first of four Academy Award nominations. Two years later he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor again in the Best Picture winner, Driving Miss Daisy (1989). The same year, Freeman teamed up with Matthew Broderick and Denzel Washington in the epic Civil War drama Glory (1989) about freed slaves being recruited to form the first all African American fighting brigade.

His career soaring to new heights, Freeman appeared frequently in well reviewed studio films including Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) and Clint Eastwood’s Oscar winning film, Unforgiven (1992) opposite Eastwood and Gene Hackman. Mr. Freeman received his third Academy Award nominated role for his turn in The Shawshank Redemption (1994) opposite Tim Robbins. Box office hits Se7en (1995) with Brad Pitt and Kiss the Girls (1997) with Ashley Judd followed.

Teaming up with Steven Spielberg, Freeman gave a powerful performance in Amistad (1997), before portraying the US President facing Armageddon in Deep Impact (1998). Continuing to show his range, the next few years saw Freeman appearing in Neil Labute’s dark comedy Nurse Betty (2000) and reprising his Kiss the Girl’s persona of “Alex Cross" in Along Came a Spider (2001), which he also produced. Memorable co-starring bows in blockbusters The Sum of All Fears (2002) and Bruce Almighty (2003) followed.

In 2005, Freeman re-teamed with Unforgiven director Clint Eastwood to star in the heart-wrenching drama Million Dollar Baby . He received his fourth Oscar nomination and took home the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his performance. Freeman continued to charm audiences as Lucias Fox in Christopher Nolan’s blockbusters, Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Freeman next top lined with Jack Nicholson in the beloved box office hit, The Bucket List and co-starred opposite Angelina Jolie in Wanted. Additionally, Freeman has starred and produced, in conjunction with his company, Revelations Entertainment: Robert Benton’s Feast of Love, Brad Silberling’s 10 Items or Less, Mimi Leder’s The Code, and Pete Hewitt’s The Maiden Heist. Freeman’s most recent role has been portraying Nelson Mandela in his third collaboration with director Clint Eastwood, Invictus, a film developed and produced by his Revelations Entertainment. For this role he received his fifth Oscar nomination, as well as Golden Globe and SAG nominations. Freeman’s commanding yet mellifluous voice has led him to narrate or host dozens of first-rate television specials covering topics including the American Civil War, the American Film Institute, blues music and the White House.
