Rich Canadians invite a working-class Mexican here for a gig, then stick him with a massive medical bill after he nearly dies on the job. Sounds unfair, but what happened to Guillermo Herrera is totally legal. My look at a fighter battling back from the brink of death, and and provincial regulations that imperil fighter safety.
Boxer Guillermo Herrera, in hospital after suffering a ruptured blood vessel in his brain during a fight in Toronto, thought he had health insurance. He was wrong.

Great gym for a few reasons. 1) You won't find better instruction than you'll get from Claude Patrick and DJ Dallaire. Both have competed at a high level -- Claude has fought and won several times in the UFC -- but knowing is one thing and teaching is something else. Claude and DJ are great teachers. They both know a ton but they're both constantly learning themselves, and it makes them better instructors. Work with them and you will improve. 2) Positive atmosphere. We have some outstanding martial artists in the gym, but we don't have a lot of egos or testosterone-addled tough guys spoiling for a fistfight every time they show up. If you're the type who treats every workout as an audition for the UFC, there's probably a gym for you... but Elite isn't it. Instructors here put learning first, which facilitates learning (surprise!!) and limits tough-guy posturing and intimidation -- and the injuries they cause. Bottom line... If you're looking for a gym that's going to sell you a dream (getting in shape is easy... you'll make a million bucks in the UFC) this might not be the place for you. But if you want to learn from the best, train with great people and improve your fitness and martial arts skills, then Elite is the spot. Period.
