For the first time since 1967, Cuba failed to win 100 medals at the Pan American Games and finished fourth in overall medal count. The reason for the low output? Money. My story on Canada, Cuba and the gentrification of the medal table.
Massive investments in amateur sport have allowed other countries to win more Pan Am medals at Cuba’s expense, tilting the balance of power toward nations with more money.

North American audiences are indifferent to the #PanAmGames but in Central and South America they're a big deal. My feature on how different audiences are receiving the games...
Outside North America, the Pan Am games aren’t an afterthought; they’re the main event of sport’s summer season.

Great gym for a few reasons. 1) You won't find better instruction than you'll get from Claude Patrick and DJ Dallaire. Both have competed at a high level -- Claude has fought and won several times in the UFC -- but knowing is one thing and teaching is something else. Claude and DJ are great teachers. They both know a ton but they're both constantly learning themselves, and it makes them better instructors. Work with them and you will improve. 2) Positive atmosphere. We have some outstanding martial artists in the gym, but we don't have a lot of egos or testosterone-addled tough guys spoiling for a fistfight every time they show up. If you're the type who treats every workout as an audition for the UFC, there's probably a gym for you... but Elite isn't it. Instructors here put learning first, which facilitates learning (surprise!!) and limits tough-guy posturing and intimidation -- and the injuries they cause. Bottom line... If you're looking for a gym that's going to sell you a dream (getting in shape is easy... you'll make a million bucks in the UFC) this might not be the place for you. But if you want to learn from the best, train with great people and improve your fitness and martial arts skills, then Elite is the spot. Period.
