Heartfelt thanks to Aldra and the staff of Mongolia Expeditions for organizing the trip of a lifetime! This is a video of a journey we took in the spring of 2014 retracing the escape route that my Russian grandparents and mother took in 1921-1922 from Khovd through the Altai Mountains of far western Mongolia, across the Gobi Desert and on into China. My grandfather Mikhail Smolianikoff, a captain in the White Army, led a group of soldiers and their families from Biysk in southern Siberia to eventual safety in China. Mongolia Expeditions planned our route using the information I provided from a translation of my grandmother's memoirs of their escape. During our trek in 2014, we camped at the base of Monkhkhairkhan Mountain (13,881 feet) in the heart of the Altai range, then descended into the Turgen and Bulgan valleys, stopping along the way to visit local Kazakh and Mongolian nomadic families in their gers (yurts). Some of them recalled family stories about the Russians who had briefly lived among them in the early 1920s. Mongolia Expeditions helped us make it through the border crossing into China at Bulgan, from where we traveled on to Urumqi.
