20 Common Myths That Climate Scientists Often Hear

http://flip.it/tZiO1R

#ClimateChange or #globalWarming is not a settled issue. Still, there are arguments that question the existence of global warming. People question the basic methods of measuring global #temperature, weightage given to regional and seasonal changes, the connection between global warming and natural #calamities, the influence of human activities including industrialization, methods of separating data of natural changes and human induced changes and so forth. This article tries to list out all questions and answers from an environmental point of view. The list is exhaustive and tries to analyze all factors that influence climate change with links to research papers. Majority of researchers consider human activities do influence climate that makes living that much more difficult. I am with the majority!

#Ferries are the shuttling workhorses on water. They transport people, vehicles and other goods. They run short distances with high frequencies of round trips. They endure tortuous duties. It is really interesting to know that Scanlines ferry company is switching to #battery power in half of their four ferries. Many administrative and tech details of this new project are not given. Ferry idle time in the port, charging time from 0% to 100% of 🔋, discharging rate of batteries at full load, #carbontax savings, how the cooling system of batteries are designed are some of them. I am confident that project viability has been studied well before undertaking this change. This may be the first biggest transportation vehicle on water that is powered by green energy. I hope the battery charging power used is also of green energy.

New technologies emerge through arduous layers of challenges from concept level to common use level. Many go into hibernation after good start, many fail to start due to lack of resources or abandoned due to impracticality. Only few reach the final goal with refinements at times. There is no denying that new technologies add values to human lives. The shared article gives trending technologies in 2016 that are set to benefit us in future. It is nice to watch the embedded video and slideshow in this shared article.

Flexible new solar panel is almost 80% lighter than traditional panels

http://flip.it/o39zoy

Though cost of largely used #solar #PV panels have come down drastically, there are efforts to bring down the weight of the panels and consequent need for robust support structure. They pose difficulties for most of the roof top installations. Researchers are trying to improve panels with thin flexible ones. There are few issues that haven't made #flexiblePanels popular yet. Though they are light and installable everywhere, their energy conversion rate is still very low. Conventional monocrystalline (using pure #silicon) has energy conversion rate of around 20%. This is costly on initial investment. Conventional polycrystalline panel (mostly used) has energy conversion rate if around 13%. Current flexible panels offered have energy conversion rate of around 10%. These flexible panels need much more space as energy conversion rate is poor. As of now, they are prone to failures due to dust and water ingression. Heating up of panels reduces energy conversion rate drastically in these panels. These panels are also not long lasting like conventional panels. These issues are being addressed in current researches. This article states a claim of a company on superiority of it's flexible panels. We need to get feedback on this and more information on technology and materials used by this company to evaluate the claims.

#Android #OS is struggling to find ways to #update all Android devices to it's latest OS due to lack of it's control on devices. #Carriers and #OEMs control this due to openness of Android. As of now, it is just under 2% of the Android population that have the latest version, #Nougat. It isn't good news. This doesn't stop enthusiasts like me from knowing what new features and tweaks are coming in future updates. The new #version promises improvement in battery life, notification tweaks, picture in picture and so many. One thing is sure that upgrades and updates in Android bring more security, speed, reliability and latest features. Android has traveled a long way from it's early days. Being a beta tester, I hope that "O" version lands in my device in Q3 this year before it's official release.

#Eco-friendly #towns are the new trends in Real estate business. These towns would have #green 🏠, green #energy for buildings and transportation, local farming for township needs, #recycling all wastes (from farms, animals and humans), clean #environment for healthy living, automation everywhere for efficiency and so on. The article refers to a new town that is coming up in USA. These projects would succeed only when initial investment and resale values are attractive. Additionally, energy cost savings and savings on resources should offset huge maintenance costs of these properties. These shouldn't be built just for elites, but also for other strata people. There could be many projects like these coming up now, but success depends on values these properties provide to the dwellers.

German coal mine set to become "giant battery" for storing renewable energy

http://flip.it/JFfkWg

It is a good model for delivery of sustainable #green #energy without assistance from #fossilFuels. The best part is the utilization of deep #coalmine that is ready for abandoning. The model shows three green energy sources, namely #solar, #wind and #biomass. All three can compliment each other depending on the season, time of the day and availability of biomass. Still, these three in combination can't give a reliable supply of electric energy and can't provide a stable grid. So, here comes the huge #battery in the form of #hydro energy. As the article defines, the mines has two reservoirs of water - one at the surface level and the other at the deep down level. When excess energy is available from the renewables, that energy is utilized to pump water from bottom reservoir to the top. When the renewables struggle to cope with demand, a hydraulic turbine situated down in the mine utilizes potential energy of top reservoir and supply electricity to the grid. The model seems to be an ideal one. Let us see how it performs when the project actually runs.

My #AndroidBeta #7.1.2 in my #Nexus6P had a system update today. My system before the update had January 2017 security update. Today's update brought March 2017 security update, the latest security update. One new feature noticed in the update is inclusion of #gesture for #fingerprintScanner. I can use swipe down and up in fingerprint scanner to open and close notifications. I find this feature useful, though a minor one. This feature is already available in Pixel phones. I hope more gestures would land for fingerprint scanner in the future.
