Selling Security and Compliance - I read an interesting article on how as an IT professional, you can sell security and compliance of your internal and external network infrastructure to stakeholders and management. It is all about how you sell it; Sales. Not everyone wants to hear that they need to spend more on security in their IT infrastructure, however, often it is a topic put down the priority list until there is a security breach at which time it is too late. One approach to getting buy-in from stakeholders is to say that you have a great idea on how you can increase sales by providing sales or marketing with a tool that will open up the sales process and cause less sales friction. This tool would simply be a compliance overview that they can bundle up and send off with any sales collateral used to secure a customer. As it is part of the sale process there may not be a need to have a fleshy document scruitinising all aspects of the company s approach to IT security, but it does create the initial interest and s

Target Corporation Cyber Attack - I was talking with a friend and colleague of mine today who got in a panic about a major hack involving millions of credit cards being stolen via a simple malware-based approach. I never knew about it, so got reading and came to realise rather quickly that this is really quite a simple attack, however, required some rather heavy technical ability. Often this sort of attack can use the simplest approach of tricking an employee into thinking they are doing the right thing by inserting that thumb drive into their computer and trying to find out who it belongs, or simply using confusion to have a user believe they need to perform some actions on behalf of the hacker who is quite convincingly a system admin. Once this is the hardest part. Once you have gained this level of trust, then access can be quite simple. The trick is keeping the access and not being detected. Why am I going on about this you think? Well read the article for yourself here - http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/20

Form April 21 2015 Google has been re-ranking all sites based on it’s new mobile friendly algorithm - Have you ever tapped on a site in the search results on your own mobile or tablet and found it impossible to read and backed out and tried the next in the list? Well, your customers could be too if your site is not mobile friendly. In fact, your site may not even rank anywhere like it used to thanks to the new features rolled out in how Google ranks it s sites. This checks and goes beyond the following to make sure that your site: Avoids software that is not common on mobile devices, like Flash Uses text that is readable without zooming Sizes content to the screen so users don t have to scroll horizontally or zoom Places links far enough apart so that the correct one can be easily tapped Not sure if your site is mobile friendly? Take the test by going to Google s mobile friendly test tool: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/ Not looking great? Get in touch with Modulus and let us help you. Starting April 21 2015 Google will be expanding it's use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal - I guess it is well overdue, but given about 60% (gotta love stats) of users trawl the web daily form their mobile phone or tablet, then it is no surprise that Google wants to make it's customers (you) experience on these devices more pleasurable. Hence ranking based on the Websites ability to display nicely across a range of devices from laptops, desktops, tablets and phones! Is your Website ready?

How secure is your company Website or network - OK, so first off I do apologise for the lack of posts, it has been a very busy time here at Modulus with all that has been going on in the online space, particularly around security and the privacy of your information and that if your customers. So, how secure is your Website and corporate network? Do you store customer information on your Website? Is your corporate network exposed to the outside world? If you are truly making the most of your Website and technology, you will have answered yes to the above. But have you taken measures to make sure that the information you store and share is safe and secure? Website developers tend to rely on the framework of their choice (PHP, Java, ASP.Net) to provide some level of security around their code and while these frameworks do a good job at securing the Website, it does not mean that someone hasn t already found an exploit in that framework, or has a keen interest on accessing data you store and will do anything they can to get to it.
