24 years ago, we got in touch with a company formation agent and on 31st Jan 1994 we registered our limited company. Which means tomorrow is the start of our 25th year!! We've been through a few ups and downs over the years but for a small company we've ridden out the financial problems from 2008 onward, and there aren't many techy internet based companies that have been formed for that long. Next stop, our 25th Anniversary !

You may have heard recently about Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities. The difference this time is that these are in hardware not software. Chips in a massive amount of computers, try to do pre-emptive processing to speed things up. If they get to part of a program where the next instruction can depend on the result of a previous instruction, the hardware will run both options while it waits and then discards one of them when it gets a result. Unfortunately this processing wrongly has access to areas of the system it shouldn't, and so hackers can use this to try to read sensitive data from memory. Our servers have been patched this week to block this through software.

Companies House must have had a busy day on the first day back of the new year!

They normally process 2,000 to 3,000 companies per day but on the 2nd January around 3000 "CS" companies (Scottish Charities) were registered along with nearly 13,000 "CE" companies (English Charities) - along with the normal daily activity. The charities appear on the Company Register in name only (no officers or registered office address are shown as these are stored with the Charity Commission) but it means that getting close to 20,000 companies were added to the register in one day! #CompaniesHouse #NewCompanies

We are now getting close to Christmas, but shortly after you come back after the New Year, remember to switch off any Credit and Debit card surcharges on your ecommerce system. The new EU directive comes into play on 13th January 2018 requiring NO card surcharges at all.

Security alert

A popular virtual keyboard app for Android users stored it's database of nearly 600 Gigabytes without a password, and got hacked, according to a ZDNet post yesterday.

If you use the AI.type keyboard app then take a look at http://www.zdnet.com/article/popular-virtual-keyboard-leaks-31-million-user-data/?platform=hootsuite

Keyboard apps have access to anything you type - credit card details, usernames, passwords, private messages etc and so anyone using this keyboard app should probably change to either the stock Android keyboard, or a different one, and change any passwords you've used via your mobile. All of them! #android #hack #keyboard

Since 2007, company formation agents have been under the Money Laundering Regulations (MLR) as a "Trust and Company Service Provider", helping to prevent Money Laundering through the setup of companies. Companies House themselves didn't provide company formation services - they are a company registrar - recording details of companies on public record. Then, a while ago Companies House started providing a service of registering companies directly through themselves. In effect competing with all the company service providers.

After a recent periodic HMRC MLR visit to our office, we asked the officer "what happens when companies get formed at Companies House? I assume they have to do the same kind of checks now that they register companies directly ?"

A recent report from Richard Osborne on the City AM website (http://www.cityam.com/275578/we-must-close-loophole-tempts-illicit-finance-and-money) has provided the answer. It states that Companies House are EXEMPT from the Money Laundering Regulations because they don't do it as part of their business. The government is trying to stop Money Laundering in the UK and their own government department has basically opened the door and allowing all and sundry to do anything underhanded with no checks !

If the government really want to stop Money Laundering in the UK, surely it ought to close its own front door ?

As a company, we now only deal with businesses or people that are registered under the money laundering regulations themselves, either through HMRC or via a supervisory body such as ICAEW, CIMA, The Law Society etc and don't deal with the general public.

Need to carry out occasional ad-hoc identity checks? How about if you are in a HR department and you want to both check the potential employee out for an identity check and also confirm their bank details but only need to do it once every few months when you hire someone new? Need to do a credit screen on someone? No problem. No contract, no commitment, person checks. Carry out as few or as many as you need. Pay per use. #mlr #identitycheck #creditscreen
