Amee Philips - Malaysia's Queen of fine jewellery design

Just over 1km from where the founder of Luxurious Magazine lives, is the Penang Island based headquarters of Amee Philips, perhaps the most talented designer of fine jewellery in Malaysia.

Where is Penang Island? You might ask. Penang is one of those places that people have heard of, but in truth couldn't really pin-point it on a map. It's a State located on the Western Coast of the South-East Asian country of Malaysia, with the Island sitting about 10km off-shore. Penang Island has a rich and varied history and is intertwined with Great Britain from it's Colonial days stretching back hundreds of years. Today, Penang is a vibrant and cosmopolitan place, somewhere that people from all around the globe come to visit, exploring the UNESCO City of Georgetown, studying the wonderful architecture and sampling it's world famous food.

For many months, Paul Godbold has raved about the beauty, quality and design of Amee's pieces, the fact he knows Amee Philips and her husband Drew personally is no guarantee that he'll like their products as many of you that have met him will attest. With Paul being based in Malaysia and the main core of the editorial team in London, we had to wait for him to provide us with the core of the article before we had a chance to put it in motion.

Malaysian shoe label XALF threw a star-studded exclusive preview to celebrate the Malaysian Collection.

In conjunction with the celebration of Malaysia’s 56th Independence Day, the duo of Xavier Mah and Alfred Hor decided that they would pay tribute with two lovingly handcrafted editions to celebrate the momentous occasion.

Like its namesake, The Malaysian 1957 and The Malaysian 1963 is an apt proponent of patriotism, which centred on the colours of the national flag and its symbolic gesture of nationalistic pride.

The event was held on a morning at the Lotus flagship showroom in Kuala Lumpur, where the arrival of distinguished guests and members of the media prompted the welcome address by emcee Choo Mei Sze. She then introduced both Xavier and Alfred to all in attendance.
“Being Malaysian, we wanted to express our gratitude for the various blessings bestowed on our country,” said Xavier. “And perhaps fittingly, we were inspired the colours of the flag. I fondly recall singing the national anthem at school assemblies and when ‘tanah tumpahnya darah ku…’ came on, I’m often reminded of the sacrifices that our forefathers made for this nation to be what it is today. Red, yellow, white and blue is prominently featured, and just once look and it’s obvious that it’s a shoe made by Malaysians for Malaysian women, who likewise have been instrumental in shouldering the burden of a growing nation.”

Designer Alfred Hor was no less coy about the painstaking designing and assembling process. “It wasn’t easy,” he joked. “Firstly, it wasn’t easily melding all the bright colours into the shoe’s silhouette without looking tacky. Secondly, all the details had to be coherent and once we’ve step away, we could see this was truly a Malaysia inspired shoe.”

Anna Chong, Executive Director of Chilla Cup also took to the stage to share his thoughts. He complimented the XALF’s creativity and tenacity in carrying out a rather ambitious project. “We’ve known and collaborated with Xavier in the past,” mentions Chong. “And to see him excel and flourish with XALF makes us more than willing participants in today’s festivities. Like our nation, Xavier and Alfred are still relatively young, but what they have achieved in this short span greatly mirrors the progress of our country. It’s young creative Malaysians such as them that will spur our nation to greater heights.”

The Malaysian is a limited edition run of 56 pairs and comes with a card indicating its manufactured date and an exclusive shoe box. And fittingly, Lotus roadsters in yellow, red, white and blue took to the tarmac and made doughnuts by spinning in concentric circles as the unveiling took place.

Guests and members of the media was able to peruse the shoes at close quarters as official sponsor Chilla Cup made sure that guests felt right at home with free-flowing canapés and drinks with co-sponsor Jan’s Kitchen chipping in as well with colourful macaroons in the colours of the national flag.

Now in its fourth year, Fabulous Food 1Malaysia, running from November 2013 to January 2014, will once more showcase the fabulous array of cuisine the country is known for. With Chinese, Indian and Arabic influences, Malaysian specialties are both diverse and exciting creating a real treat for the pallet.

Food experiences in Malaysia are also known to be extremely varied ranging from street food to fine dining which has firmly established the destination on the gourmet map. Each month will be dedicated to a new food experience. During November, the festival will be focusing on gourmet food and all high-end eateries, whilst in December the spotlight will be ASEAN Food Heritage Trail month, Malaysia's foodie roadshow showcasing cuisine from across the country. The festival wraps up in January with a month dedicated to Malaysia's fabulous restaurants and world-renowned street food.

The festival is the ideal opportunity to discover the country's tantalising dishes including Yong Tau Foo, a clear soup originally from China which is commonly served with a large variety of ingredients such as fish balls, crab sticks, lettuce, ladies fingers, cuttlefish and chilies to name a few. For further street food delights, try Mee Rebus, Southeast Asia's staple noodle dish served with a variety of vegetables and tofu and a fragrant curry gravy. From humble origins to one of the most celebrated Malaysian dishes, Char Kway Tweo is a tasty stir fry made from rice noodles, seafood, beansprouts, soy sauce and chilies, which also heavily features in any street food festival. Any round-up of Malaysian food wouldn't be complete without mentioning Rendang, the traditional and tasty curry with stewed meat served at ceremonies and now adopted all over Southeast Asia.
