Robin’s Diary
It’s that time of year again when the talk is about awards nominations for films, TV programmes, Actors, sports personalities etc and it is the same for the Motor Trade as we are working on our entries to the Motor Trade magazines ‘Dealer Awards’. As you know I am the sort of guy who always loves to win and in the case of these Motor Trade awards, winning is even more important than ever because it gives my loyal team of management and staff the acknowledgement they deserve for working so well together, with one unified goal – to excel whilst providing our unique style of customer service.
As you may or may not know, I have been away for a couple of weeks so it gave me so much pleasure to read the following customer review on Facebook whilst I was away – which fortunately confirmed my suspicions that my remarkable team continue to pull together whether I am here or away and endorse our unique culture.
“Robin Luscombe has created something almost unheard-of in today's motor trade (and even in the realm of Customer Service in general) - a team of professionals who actually do care, and who crusade for total customer satisfaction in return for the pleasure of knowing that people will come back time and again to be looked after well, and thus will help the business to continue and to thrive. In these times of cheap online bargains that usually bite you back, there's no substitute for real old-fashioned face-to-face service from people who know what they're talking about. I have no affiliation of any kind with Luscombe Mitsubishi, except as a very satisfied customer!”
Let me tell you, reading that post was certainly worth going away for!!

Robin’s Diary

I seem to be getting grumpy and in danger of turning the diary into a weekly moan, so this week it's a ‘Good News’ story!

One of our customers, Peter Smith, who I got to know about 7 years ago while buying his car, told me about a Dementia Cafe he was trying to establish - this resonated with me as my mum suffered this horrible disease - so I have been a keen follower of his amazing work.

Peter set up the Tea Cosy Memory Cafe at the Parish Centre in Rothwell and it now regularly attracts over 100 people. It has been so successful that Peter was rewarded with a visit to Buckingham Palace and is responsible for West Yorkshire Police being Dementia friendly, and much more.

Peter you deserved a medal, and got one – the British Empire Medal, but your tireless efforts supporting dementia sufferers in Leeds is a great ‘Good News’ story - you've done a great job, and what makes it even better is that you just seem to want not only to help local sufferers, but also others to set up similar initiatives likes yours – in fact there are now over 40 Dementia Cafes in Leeds alone, providing practical support to people living with Dementia, including carers and families, which I think is absolutely fantastic.

Are you aware of the Impact of ‘Disruptors’ on Buying a Car?

In most areas of life nowadays so-called ‘Disruptors’ are offering new ways to do things! Uber, Airbnb, Facebook, Google, the list goes on, and whilst they have many good points, are there any negatives??

I will concentrate on the areas I know most about, the car industry!

You will be aware of recent changes to the way you can buy a new car, and sell your existing car, but the question is - are those changes better for you?

Well, the traditional way to buy a car is for you the customer to look at different models, different sellers, just like we have done for years - where you decide to spend your money is usually the place that offers you the best value - the seller will have a budget for marketing, premises, staff, and to ensure they stay in business they will have a built-in profit – all fairly straightforward - but the seller historically does not have to pay a 3rd party a commission!

That's where the ‘Disruptors’ come in! An example of a Disruptor is CarWow – CarWow spend a fortune in marketing and charge a fee to their retailers to cover these costs consumers won't see the costs they have charged to the retailer, but, as it's an extra cost in the process, it has to be passed on, so inevitably the buyer will end up paying it.

The same principle applies to companies which offer to buy your car direct and imply they will give you more money! Do you know these companies are owned by car auctions? And, are you aware most of their customers are car dealers, buying cars to sell back to you? Once again, there is an extra step in the chain, and that requires another profit –which means you, the customer, ends up paying more in the long run – or actually getting less for your car! So, conversely, if you sell your car direct to the person or company which is going to sell it on, you will be offered more for your car as there isn't another third party requiring another profit from your car. Research from AutoTrader, the leading used car classified website in the UK, suggests car buying websites offer £1000 less than the real value of the car!

Consider this - if a third party company, (a ‘Disruptor’), who advertises on TV, takes a £300 slice from your new car, and, in addition you sell your PX to a car buying website company who will also need to make a profit from a quick sale in a trade auction, there could be up to £1000 in the transaction going to third party companies which, as I have demonstrated, is an unnecessary additional cost. Add finance to this and the situation gets even worse!

A car dealer makes profit selling cars, and if the dealer provides the finance, it helps to make selling the car easier for the buyer, however, if you take finance from a broker, his only potential income is from the finance, he won't provide it for nothing, he has adverts to pay for etc etc, so you are much better contributing to the cost of ONE dealer’s advertising, rather than contributing to a CarWow AND We Buy Any Car AND 24/7 finance that's THREE companies (‘Disruptors’) needing an income from your ONE purchase as opposed to the old fashioned way of JUST ONE DEALER needing an income!

In the long term, the big issue from my perspective is that there really is only one place where you, the prospective customer, can call in and test drive a car, ask someone to show you how a feature works, have your car checked over, and talk face to face with someone who has knowledge about your car - hence the only matter for consideration is how you pick the best place to go. One really positive impact of the Digital Age is the effect it has had on customer service, driven initially by Trip Advisor, but now widespread across all industries. Reputation is no longer reliant on word of mouth – instead it is based on reviews which are accessible to everyone via the web, as a result of which, standards have improved – however, as with hotels, not all car dealers are the same, not all have realised the importance of great service - so - before you make your decision as to where to purchase your car, or in fact make any significant purchase, it is important to check the genuine customer reviews on Google, Facebook, Auto Trader and the like. That way, I am hopeful you will find a great dealership, that will fully explain all the differences between the many different ways to buy a new car, PCP, HP, PCH, and believe me, add that to all the information you need on emissions, and you will see the benefit of purchasing from a dealer who has received great feedback from its customers on the many different review sites – however, I recommend you make check a couple of review sites, and make sure that the feedback matches across the sites because you should be able to see a common thread running through them all, on different platforms.

Last week I received a great compliment, and it was all down to this diary, which started 7 years ago, firstly as part of my newspaper adverts and then added to social media. Over the years, I have received many comments from readers about my diary content, many readers will never buy a car, nor even a car part, but that’s not the idea of the diary – it is just to keep our name to the fore, add a little interest or intrigue to our marketing, and maybe just get you thinking.

So what’s the compliment I received you may well wonder - well in last week’s Yorkshire Post, right next to our advert which featured my diary, another local dealer had copied me and included a blog in his advert!! It was even in the same position in his advert as my diary is in our ad - granted it wasn’t ‘Robin’s diary’, neither was it written by the person who owns the business!

In fact, it was all about deals on his cars, which, fortunately for you readers, mine isn’t! Like so many copies, this one was not as good as the original, just like counterfeit goods – it may look the same, using someone else’s idea but has all the tell-tale signs of a copy!! And don’t they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery? I just question whether it will last as long as the original?

Robin’s Diary
I have just read a piece on the BBC website about drivers with more than 12 points on their licence who have not been banned! In fact, more than 10,000 motorists have more than 12 points, and the north of England has the most! This particularly annoys me, as I got three tickets, all within 5 MPH of the limit of either 30 or 40 a while back and had to survive two and a half years without another, yet it now appears that I, like 10,000 others, could have got away with it!! Surely if 12 points is the limit, that’s it, and rather than letting people carry on regardless, why not adjust the length of the ban to the crime??
That brings me onto another bugbear - why on earth do they ban people from driving who are not old enough to drive, or who didn’t have a licence in the first place? They didn’t care before when they didn’t have a licence so why would they be concerned with a ban? I could go on about Proceeds of Crime etc, but as the law breakers seem to have more rights than others it seems a bit of a waste of time.
On a much brighter note, well done to the 4 x 100 metre relay team, putting one over the Yanks at the World Athletics Championships, a brilliant team achievement!
