Prior to my trip to SF I read the comments on this hotel and found it peculiar, that it seems to be a hate it or love it thing, reviewers either giving 1 or 5 stars. Now that I'm back I can understand both sides: I do understand why ppl where disappointed, by it. I slept under blankets with holes in it, drank the really weird, hot, black stuff they gave away as 'coffee' and kinda wondered about the funny smell. If you are looking for a nice, best-western-style hotel with your whole family, don't choose the Mithila. It is not a hotel. It's more like a hostel. BUT: If you are planning a trip with your pals or your s/o and you are in your mid-twenties, it's fine. The guys at the counter are really nice (and really seemed to do everything they could). The hotel is well located, only a couple of blocks from Powell St. (Yeah, cable cars!) and Polk St. (Yeah, beer!). So, after reading all those super negativ or super positiv reviews, just think what you are looking for in the place you want to stay during your trip to SF. Next time I'm going to SF I know I'd choose it again.

Surprised to see the good reviews, this hotel has steadily gone down hill and I felt like I was getting ripped off. The hotel front desk manager is polite only until something is amiss, ask him a few questions or attempt to report a problem with the room and he will kindly tell you to "go find another hotel". They were expensive, in the lower 200s per night for a single bed but don't have the quality or the service to match. The rooms are not just old but also inhospitable. I can't say too many people stay out of choice. Bottom line, don't look for customer service and don't report a problem or you will be met with threats to be thrown out (they know you can't go anywhere else for the night and will use it). They're in it for the SF tourism business and hiked up their prices even though the service or the room conditions can't match. This hotel is nowhere as good as it used to be based on the reviews below.

The bottom line: It's basically like a Motel 6 in Union Square. Functional, but by no means fancy. If you are not a big fan of older style hotel rooms that have less than contemporary furnishings and features, it's probably not for you or your spouse. But, if you want a relatively clean place to sleep and shower with free internet, microwave and a mini-fridge and a dainty bite to eat for breakfast, go for it! The front desk personnel, especially Tim, is accomodating and friendly. I left a coat and my wife's flat iron there and he held it for 6 weeks with no charge.

Dirty room with toenail clipping within the bed sheets. and girl at front dest was very condescendin and did not care. There is no cable TV and the overall feel of the hotel is like a crack den. I had a strange man knocking on my door at 1:00am asking for help and to let him in. When I asked him to leave he stood outside my door. When I called the front desk they gave me attitude and tried to make me feel bad for waking them up.

The hotel is right in the heart of San Francisco- walking distance to many places. It's an older hotel, but that's what gave it charm; I could just picture people coming here in the 20s and how elite it probably was then. The room had a huge window with great views. Just a very cute place. Would stay again!

This place was fucking horrible. We stayed with my friend for 2 nights. I woke up on second night because of something crawling on my body, turned on the lights - and it was fucking bedbug! I killed at least 20 of them, while waking up 6or8 times that night. The "curtains" were pinned to the wall with 3 pins. And it was 92 bucks for a room with double and twin! shite!

we booked it because of the location and we will remember it for a long, long time. the first room was incredibly small, just enough place for our luggage and smelled like an historic sofa. the windows did not open completely (to let free the nice smell) which was not too sad because we only saw a wonderfull brick wall just one meter away. we woke up early in the morning and found blood on the sheet. after lifting the pillow an army of bedbugs was stampeding into the mattress. bah! we had to leave early - nobody was at the reception. I tried to call several times while on the street without any luck. around noon I finally got somebody on the phone and asked to change the room because of the bedbugs. his answer: "why did you wait til noon to tell me that?". the next room had no bedbugs - at least we haven't seen any. the mattress looked like a good hideaway. do not book this hotel. it is dirty, unfriendly and pricy.
