VOLUNTEER ON A BOARD?
Like a business or a homeowner, a nonprofit organization needs to protect its property from loss. Nonprofit insurance will include property insurance, liability coverage, business auto insurance, and/or workers' compensation. The primary elements of nonprofit insurance should consider:

Directors and Officers Insurance - Most, if not all, nonprofits are run by a board of directors. These members should have proper directors and officers insurance to protect them from claims and actions against the nonprofit.

Crime Coverage - This protects against external and internal theft of revenues intended for the nonprofit.

Volunteer Accident Insurance - This covers volunteers for injuries while volunteering for the organization.

Special Events Coverage - Nonprofts hold special activities, functions, and events and oftentimes these need to be covered by an individual policy.

Do I Really Need Flood Insurance?

If having flood insurance is a condition of your home or business loan then this isn't a question that you may be pondering - you're already covered. But if not, you may wonder if it's really worth having. Many people are kicking themselves because they didn't have flood insurance after Hurricane Matthew. There is a good reason why loans are written to require coverage. Protecting assets is always a good idea.

Like most types of plans, you want coverage for the expected and unexpected! For your home and your place of business.

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) cites $650 as the annual premium average. That breaks down to $12.50 per week for peace of mind and a state of knowing what you can expect in the event of a flood. According to NFIP, one foot of water could cause $27,150 of damage to a 1,000-square-foot home, and the average claim is more than $38,000. Check out the sites online tool to generate a personalized estimate for your needs.

Also, check with your Mitchell Noel Insurance rep to find out what home improvements may lower your payment. Such things as installing flood vents could help you save.

If you are thinking about flood insurance we can help you decide on the best plan for your home or business. Give us a call today so we can help put your mind at ease!

Strange and Unusual Insurance

There are so many different types of insurance policies out there that it may be hard to really narrow down which policies you truly need without expert guidance. Here's a policy that most people would never need: Alien Abduction Insurance. GECIO reports a London based firm has sold more than 30,000 alien abduction insurance policies throughout Europe, but Wikipedia claims the very first company to offer UFO abduction insurance was the St. Lawrence Agency in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

To cash in on the claim, you will need, of course, to provide proof of the abduction. Is this type of insurance policy for the truly paranoid - or for the over-prepared?!

That Sinking Feeling

It should come as no surprise that Florida experiences more sinkholes than any other state. Consider this before you deny additional sinkhole coverage: If you do not have sinkhole insurance coverage and your home is damaged due to sinkhole activity, your claim must meet all critera for catastrophic ground cover collapse otherwise your insurance company can legally refuse to pay your claim.

Florida law defines the criteria for catastrophic ground cover collapse as "geological activity that results in all the following: 1. The abrupt collapse of the ground cover; 2. A depression in the ground cover clearly visible to the naked eye; 3. Structural damage to the building, including the foundation; and 4.The insured structure being condemned and ordered to be vacated by the governmental agency authorized by law to issue such an order for that structure." Sinkhole.com suggests that first time home buyers make sure that the property (including structure) is insurable, step one. Next, make sure sinkhole coverage is included in your homeowner's insurance policy- if it's not, you should consider purchasing a stand-alone sinkhole insurance policy as a precaution.

Burning Up in April?

We tend to experience a lot of rain in the summer, but other times our landscape is just right to breed wildfires. In most insurance policies, wildfires are consider one of many forms of fire damage. Unfortunately, that is not always the case, and it is up to the homeowner to make sure that their home is adequately protected by their insurance policy.

Contact us to review your current coverage. In the meantime, clearing your roof and yard of debris (leaves, branches) and treating your deck, porch, or patio with fire-retardant material will help protect your home!

Prepare For Rain Season, Now!

It may be the beginning of the year, but it is never too late to prepare your home for the rainy months.

Do you know what your flood insurance covers?

You do not need to live in a designated flood prone area to benefit from the peace of mind that comes with flood insurance. If you have property that could be damaged or destroyed by water, you need flood insurance on top of your homeowners insurance.

Why? Simply because homeowners policies do not cover damage from flooding.
