Myth No. 9: A good house will ‘pass’ the inspection
Home inspection reports will never indicate whether a property passes or fails, says ASHI’s Executive Director Frank Lesh. That’s because everything depends on a buyer's tolerance level: What’s acceptable for one buyer could cause another to walk away.

“I'm the judge of the house in terms of whether it’s safe," Lesh explains. "But I always ask people: Can you live with this?”

If you can, then the house passes your test. And that's all that matters.

The three-year mark is also the maximum amount of time you should let your septic system go without being pumped out. It's especially important to keep your septic system in good shape if you plan on selling your home.

Heating and cooling registers should be cleaned about once a year, but most people don’t think about them until they have to be removed for something like a painting project.
1. Start by dunking in soapy water.
2. Scrub gently with a soft brush to remove the dust and mildew that build up on the louvers.
3. Rinse with clean water.
4. Dry completely, including the gasket before reinstalling.
