Last night's terrible commute was sheer comedy (at least I hope I'll be able to tell this story with laughter soon).

4 pm OCTranspo site says there is no way to travel between my office and Overbrook Community Centre. Not that there is no good route or that all routes involve a lot of walking but no route at all. Eventually I figure out that it I don't say I want to travel by bus, it can find a route. Some glitch in the new planner I suppose.

4:30 I realize OCTranspo isn't including STO buses in my route. So the time is long because it has me walking for 30 minutes to catch an OCTranspo bus.

6:15 I start my trip. Bus is 20 minutes late (but there is a snow storm so okay). When the STO bus leaves its last Gatineau stop the bus driver announces we are being detoured via a different bus to Ottawa. He refuses to let people who want to transfer off the bus because he has no stops on the detoured routes (There are safe bus stops but his route isn't scheduled to stop there.) He doesn't announce why we are detoured but it was probably due the US VP visit.

6:45 Bus driver announces he has a 5 minute rest stop before he will continue on the route. Several people on the bus aren't sure where we are so they can't decide if they should wait or walk. [We were somewhere on St Patrick I think but you can't tell for the snow.]

655 Bus driver skips the Chateau Laurier stop where many people were expecting to transfer to Rideau Centre and OC Transpo buses, The next stop is Melcalfe. Wellington sidewalks were plowed but not salted so it is a skating rink down the hill as you work against the crows heading to see the lighting of the lights. Half the sidewalk is blocked because they are doing some work on the stone fence.

705 I've walked back to Rideau Centre when I realized my 18 bus is had its route changed due to the closure of Rideau Street. It now starts at Daly and Nicholas and does run West of Rideau Centre. I love how my connecting buses now don't connect by more than a km.

7:10 I realize I am lost in the new section of the mall. The advice I get leads me into the parking garage which I discover no longer has a pedestrian exit to Daly or Nicholas. (I sneak down the ramp after a car.)

7:15 I end up in a street protest (something about teachers). So buses are both delayed and detouring this area. Luckily OCTranspo has staff in the area and they tell me my bus is the only one not being detoured but that it will be up to 30 minutes late.

7:40 I arrive at another bus stop where the sidewalk is under consturction or damaged. Street lights are out too. it isn't clear where the entrance to the community centre is or if it is the community centre.

I've had all these problems before but never had a planning map glitch, a diplomatic road closure, a route change and a protest during the snow storm at the same time.

From +Charlie Stross The true cost of interruptions (my experience says this is as true for writing novels as for programming): https://t.co/bgJDBTpMMa

I get this. But as a manager I do need one team touch point a week or we drift too far apart. Every week I worry pulling us together costs us too much progress.

Someday perhaps I'll suffer from the Curse of Knowledge in a coding way. For now that is only a distant dream.

+Michael Richardson You available to connect with F? No chat client, no Google hangout experience. Should we just take the expense and talk by phone or Skype?

My only addition would determining how to interrupt between meetings.

I have a maker who prefers email interruption but doesn't tell me when email is read and appears to use FIFO on the entire mail queue. I'd physically interrupt less if I thought my email interruption were read with 5 hours of being received.

I'd love to have a secret code word to trigger priority status in his giant email queue so it was flagged as urgent when he scans his email queue every couple of hours.

Interesting thoughts about future media in the wake of this week's Google I/O news.
