Norway is one of the most stunningly beautiful countries I have ever been to...But all this beauty comes at a cost, its extremely rugged coastline makes road trips quite a long and time-consuming endeavour. Many visit by sea, with many cruise ships or the traditional Hurtigruten boat route plying the Northern waters.  However, you might also chose to move around by plane. In that case, Norway's Widerøe, a regional airline operating a...

I have always found the Boeing 757 one of the most beautiful aircraft ever (so sad to see so few of them left!) and, although, I have yet to visit, my understanding is that Iceland is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. So, I, necessarily, got quite excited when I learned that Icelandair had actually combined the beauty of the two them to create one of the most eye-catching aircraft liveries out there. And my excitement only g...

As a regular Easyjet flyer I learned, with surprise, that the veteran low cost airline was about to renew its livery. No small thing, since this is the first change in Easyjet's livery design since it got rid of the telephone number that used to decorate the sides of its aircraft back in 1998. Easyjet has also released this "making-off " video that I am sure airline design fans will enjoy: To be honest, I have mixed feelings abou...

A regular reader based in the Maldives (lucky guy!), whom we thank, happened to be present at the arrival of Maldivian's first Airbus A321 and has just sent some pictures over.  The aircraft in question, an ex-Iberia A321 with registration 8Q-IAI (it was delivered to the Spanish airline in 2005) will join Maldivian's other Airbus, an A320 (on lease from ALC) and will be flying, mainly, routes to China. Maldivian's A321, immediatel...

Every year airlines release some figures about their activities:number of passengers, of operations, revenues, expenses... In addition to these, an airline in Russia, Ural Airlines, has released a set of "unusual" figures related to its activity during the year. For example: Ural Airlines aircraft have worn out 904 tyres during 2014. Its clients drank 663,000 litres of tea (according to airline sources, this is enough tea to fill...

While the previous article looked at how the economic crisis and the plunging ruble is affecting Russian airlines, this one takes a deeper look at one of the airlines that seems to have been hardest hit by this financial storm, UTair. UTair is not your typical airline, it grew out of a helicopter business that serviced primarily the oil and gas business in Western Siberia, and, despite commercial aviation now representing the largest...

I have been following with interest the launch of India's newest airline: Vistara Vistara is a joint venture between Tata, one of India's oldest and largest business conglomerates, and Singapore Airlines (for example, Vistara's frequent flyer programme is linked to Singapore's one). Vistara's market entry comes at an interesting time, when the Indian airline industry as a whole, and helped by lower oil prices, is expected to make ...

By Bernard Musyk Cyprus Airways disappeared in mid January; the EU deemed a €102m state aid package received by the company as illegal, forcing the airline to return €65M. Unable to do so, the company was declared unviable and had its flying licence revoked. During the last few weeks of Cyprus Airways’ long life, I was surprised to hear from the Cypriot Finance Minister that ‘the era of thoughtlessly throwing money at the carrier ...

Can you think of any better location to host an airline's offices than a former airport control tower? Norwegian's new office: Barcelona's old control tower (this airport function was moved to a new building when most of Barcelona's traffic moved to the new T1 terminal  Norwegian's now commands, quite literally,  a privileged position at Barcelona airport. The inauguration of its new offices at Barcelona's airport former control ...

Until now low cost carriers in Europe, unlike those in Asia, had been focusing on the European market.  The economics and operational requirements of long-haul flights are considerably different than those of short and medium haul flights, so it made sense for European airlines that had been conceived to operate flights within the relatively short distances of the European continent to stay that way. You might say that some Europe...

This is an absolutely fantastic advertisement by Norwegian. Someone at the Nordic airline noticed what was already know the World over: that the Norwegian flag contains six other flags! And, as it happens, Norwegian already flies to five of them! PS: not the first time that Norwegian rocks it in the advertising front!

Last September I had the privilege to witness the unveiling of both Etihad's new livery and its first Airbus A380.  At the time the aircraft was not fully ready, so we could see it only from the outside (although we were treated to a spectacular show!) Well, glad to report that that very first Airbus A380 has finally been delivered and taken to the skies. Here is a nice pic of this moment, courtesy of Airbus.
