Just sharing some some pics that I took during my latest flight on Swiss business class. The flight in question was LX1325, from Moscow Domodedovo to Zurich. Some 3.5h up in the air on an Airbus A320-200 (HB-IJJ). This side of the terminal at Domodedovo is where Star Alliance carriers usually come to dock - both Lufthansa and Swiss have several flights a day to the Russian capital from their hubs. The Swiss lounge at DME is to ...

One of the side effects of Transaero's bankruptcy was the demise of its Amur Tiger Boeing 747. That amazing piece of airline livery artwork, that aimed to highlight the Russian airline's commitment to the preservation of this endangered species of Siberian tiger, ended up, like most of Transaero's fleet, at a storage airport in Spain. But, just as some of Transaero's Jumbos were transferred to Aeroflot's subsidiary Rossiya, it see...

The announcement had been awaited for quite some time, what has been quite a surprise is the scope of Norwegian's new long-haul operation out of Barcelona. At a press conference today, Norwegian's CEO Bjorn Kos has confirmed that direct long-haul flights to the US will be launched from Barcelona airport in June 2017. Newark (x4 weekly), Los Angeles (x3 w), Oakland (for San Francisco) (x3 w) and Fort Lauderdale (for Miami) (x2 w) a...

As it looks like we are heading to a drone economy of sorts, and that these drones are going to be sharing the air space with other sorts of flying craft, the need to track and monitor drone activity becomes apparent. The partnership announced by Flightradar24 and Skysense fits into this context. Skysense, that as part of the deal, will get investment from Flightradar24, develops light-weight ADS-B systems (under the name BCON¹) tha...

Through a tip fom Aerobarcelona I learn that AirAsia X has updated its route map and flight programme (as shown by sources that track the airline's programming changes) to include Barcelona and Istanbul. To be clear, there is neither an official confirmation yet of any such route being launched, not is it possible to book flights on it, but, by any measure, this is a powerful hint. If we are to judge by the way the info in the map, ...

Of the many aviation-related stories that I come across regularly while writing this blog, this one really made me smile. A nice, light, story for these hot days of summer when most of the Northern Hemisphere is on holidays, The Lego Pilot is the tiny alter ego of an A320-family British pilot. Just as his real-life self, The Lego Pilot (that is not officially affiliated to the Danish brand), travels around the world with his phone ...

The private aviation industry has a few annual gathering events, and one of them is Jet Expo in Moscow. Although the Russian market has been affected by economic and geopolitical turmoil, Moscow is still home to scores of ultra-high-net-worth individuals, including a notable number of billionaires. Not a surprise, then, that the Russian capital, and Jet Expo in particular, features quite prominently in the calendar private jet indus...

Few topics of conversation are as universal as that of airline fares. Why some flights go from being very cheap to costing a little fortune in a matter of hours? What motivates sudden fare changes? How airlines decide what air fares are you going to pay? Do fares depend on how much the airline knows about you? And, perhaps most importantly, how can travellers make the most of technology in order to fly for less? I touch all this ...

The link between commercial aviation and the World of startups and innovation really fascinates me (in part because I have been professionally active in both), and one that we have covered in these pages repeatedly. Aviation is, by definition, a highly technological field, it takes a lot of science to get a piece of metal to cross the globe at 30,000ft!, but technification goes well beyond the purely operational aspects of the busine...

Still over a year to go...but KLM has already announced that it will cease Fokker 70 operations on 29th October 2017. This will be the first time in several decades that there are no Fokker aircraft sporting KLM's trademark blue. The tasks fulfilled by the small emblematic Dutch-made airliner will be taken over by Embraer E175 and E-190s, of which KLM has already 31 (30 E-190s and 1 E-175), with 16 more E-175s joining the fleet up t...

Where do old aircraft go when they retire? Some go to storage airports, such as this one in Teruel, Spain. But a whole lot of other, rather imaginative, uses can be found for ageing aircraft that have reached the end of their productive life... For example, Virgin Atlantic has been withdrawing a number of its veteran Boeing 747s. In this case, having a space flight subsidiary within the same group of companies, comes in handy. Virg...

If yesterday we presented Belavia's World of Tanks livery, today is the turn of Aeroflot's CSKA Airbus. In addition to sponsoring Manchester United (and having, of course, a conveniently ManU-liveried aircraft), Aeroflot, Russia's flag carrier, has had a long standing relationship with CSKA, one of the top sports clubs in Russia. Aeroflot's St.Peterburg-based subsidiary Rossiya had already a football-themed aircraft, but in this c...
