Memoria Perdida, the photo book on Spain's lack of historical memory, featured in the Washington Post:
"Miquel Gonzalez, a photographer with Spanish roots living in Holland, became frustrated at the lack of memorials at the sites of atrocities committed against the Spanish people during the Spanish Civil War and under the repressive regime of Francisco Franco. According to Gonzalez, as many as 114,000 bodies of those killed during that period in Spain’s history are still in unmarked mass graves on the edges of towns and villages. Many of the sites have been lost or forgotten, and some have been covered up by new construction, erasing any sign of the past. Spurred by his frustration, Gonzalez spent three years traveling Spain, searching for what he calls its “lost memory.”

Memoria Perdida - A photobook recovering Spain's Lost Memory 1936-1975

I have been quite busy with the crowdfunding campaign of my book MEMORIA PERDIDA | Spain's Lost Memory 1936-1975 and for the moment we have reached 48% of the book's financing.
There are only few days left and it will not be easy to reach the goal, so it is crucial that you continue to support and share the campaign with your contacts as much as you can. If you have a blog or a newsletter I would appreciate sharing some words about the project.
The book shows the work of the last three years, photographs of the sites of mass graves that have not been opened or dignified to this day and the places of related atrocities. The bodies of up to 114,000 ‘disappeared’ from the Spanish Civil War and the dictatorship of Francisco Franco still lie along roadsides, in ravines or in fields and in unmarked mass graves on the edges of towns and villages.
I carried out the photographing and travel independently with my own resources. For the publication of the book, a collective effort is needed, bearing in mind that most institutions do not want to get involved with the politically sensible topic.

Therefore, I would appreciate your support for my crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter:

Thank you,

Memoria Perdida - My personal project recovering Spain's Lost Memory 1936-1975 is taking shape.
The body of work comprises photographs of atrocity sites and sites of mass graves that have not been opened or commemorated yet. The Castle of Montjuïc in Barcelona will exhibit my series Memoria Perdida (Spain's Lost Memory) from 10 May to 11 September 2018.

The castle, a former prison and execution site during the Spanish Civil War and postwar, is an impressing location to show the work.

Memoria Perdida comprises photographs of atrocity sites and sites of mass graves that have not been opened or commemorated yet. To this day the bodies of up to 114,000 ‘disappeared’ from the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) and the dictatorship of Francisco Franco (1939-1975) lie in unmarked mass graves in roadsides, on the edges of towns and villages, in ravines or in fields.

Check out my project about Spain's general amnesia when it comes to the disappeared and murdered during the Spanish Civil War and the 39 years of Franco's dictatorship. Today Spain counts 114,226 disappeared, most of them thought to lie in unmarked mass graves. The series will be exposed next year and I am still looking for spaces that may be interested to host the exposition. Pérez Esquivel: "A people without memory is condemned to be dominated".
