I don't read a lot of "suspense" novels, but this one is amazing. Here's why.

The Stranger in the House: A Review of Ten White Geese

"This is suspense at its most spare. A psychological screw – familiar but unnamed, liberating but fatalistic – cranks tighter with every paragraph..."

A novel about what we're thinking about when we think about how we think. My latest review at +The Discarded Image

“Remember the Thalamus!” A Review of Andrew’s Brain

"Andrew is the ultimate unreliable narrator: he knows that 'there is nothing you can think of except of yourself thinking'...."

The narrator of E. L. Doctorow’s new novel is Andrew. Or, more accurately, Andrew’s brain. Or, perhaps most accurately, some consciousness that refers to itself as Andrew. It’s hard to get your bearings in this novel of neuroscience, because Andrew is the ultimate unreliable narrator: he knows that “there is nothing you can think of except of yourself thinking.”

For almost 50 years, she was the absolute ruler of a third of the world's population. So, you know, you might want to know something about her.  ;)
Jung Chang’s biography, Empress Dowager Cixi: The Concubine Who Launched Modern China, argues that Cixi has long been misunderstood. A Discarded Image review.

And now, the thrilling conclusion to my 9-day micro-review marathon at +The Discarded Image. Don't want to hear anyone say they don't know what to read! :)
We are wrapping up our end-of-the-year Micro-Review Marathon with The Good Lord Bird by James McBride.

If you're interested in current happenings in religious higher ed, don't miss +Brandon Withrow's latest piece.
Bryan College is returning to its fundamentalist roots and obligating professors to sign a creationist statement. It may be tragic, but it isn't a new.

This year, I'm determined to read more books that were originally published in languages other than English. Here's my 3-point argument for why you should join me.
What about all the great literature being published in other languages? I’ve come up with at least 3 reasons to add more translated works to your list.

Did you know?

Ben Franklin wrote more letters to his baby sister than he wrote to anyone else. And she did some writing of her own, while raising 12 children and numerous grandchildren, managing a business, and dodging British soldiers. Learn more about Jane's obscure but remarkable story in my latest review for +The Discarded Image

Book of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin
New #Nonfiction #BookReview

"What would it mean to write the history of an age not only from what has been saved but also from what has been lost? What would it mean to write a history concerned not only with the lives of the famous but also with the lives of the obscure? These are the questions that led Harvard historian Jill Lepore to dig into the personal history of Jane Franklin, sister of the great statesman."

I've never been to Haiti, but this book transported me there.

Nonfiction Review: Claire of the Sea Light

"Each chapter develops, one at a time, a small cast of characters whose lives are intricately woven together by passion, violence and generosity..."

Introduction
Writing + Book Reviewing + Content Strategy

A former magazine editor and marketing communications director, I'm now senior content strategist for the digital agency Hanson Inc. I blog about books on my website, and at The Discarded Image, where I'm a Contributing Editor.  I am co-author with my husband, historian Brandon Withrow, of the History Lives series, a YA history of Christianity. If I ever get my act together, you'll see a few more books from me down the road -- fiction and non.

I grew up on an apple orchard in NW Ohio but came to love city life while doing my undergrad work in Chicago and grad work in Philadelphia. Now I'm fixing up a little cottage with my husband back in a small town in Ohio, where we walk to the library, the coffee shop, and the weekly farmers' market.

When I need to clear my head, I work in my perennial and vegetable gardens, cook, or pick up a book from my never-ending To Read stack.

And I have an abundance of nieces and nephews. Go ahead, ask. I can talk about them all day.
