This has been my local for years now. What more can I say? The first time I was there the landlord noticed my pint was a bit cloudy and gave me a new glass for free.

+Kiri Wagstaff has an interesting position paper (http://www.wkiri.com/research/papers/wagstaff-MLmatters-12.pdf) on the irrelevance (my word choice) of much academic machine learning (ht +Charles Sutton). It overlaps quite a bit with a conversation I was having with +Tom Mitchell yesterday about related issues in natural language processing. I haven't thought enough about all of Kiri's points, but I'm kind of skeptical about her proposed six challenges. I don't think irrelevance is the result of "bad" choices of problems to work on, it is the result of academic incentive systems that operate well beyond machine learning. Incentive systems also play a big (bigger?) role in what we do in industry: a good part of what we work on makes sense or cost-benefit considerations, but it's not the kind of result that excites anyone except those of us deep into the specifics of the problem at hand. Sometimes, such choices would only be of interest to our competitors, in which case we won't talk about them anyway. Nevertheless, we need all to talk more about these issues to find questions that are both scientifically exciting and practically useful. I'm very happy that we have plenty of those at work, and I hope to help bring more of those fun+profit problems to the forefront.
My background is in Computer Science, Planetary Science, and Geology. I am most interested in problems that lie at the interfaces between these fields, such as automated methods (artificial intelligen...

+Fernando Pereira what would language papers look like should they wish to become more `relevant' I wonder?  many of these points about ML apply to NLP too.  i guess in the end beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

hell has a special place for people who publish a paper essentially repeating your own work without actually citing you.  our work from 2011: Sasa Petrovic, Miles Osborne and Victor Lavrenko. trying to book accommodation in Jeju is maddening. just why did the organisers list a set of hotels each of which has a website just in Korean and using flash?

Thought this is another conference. The information it provides is far more comprehensive than the ACL site. http://plaza.snu.ac.kr/~apmc9/trans.htm

how strange. I have received an offer to spend Google Adwords money (ok), except the message is in Croatian.

I am dreading going to ACL. 10 hour flight to Seoul, then a 30 minutes train journey to another airport, followed by a one hour flight. then a 50 minute car (= taxi) journey to the venue. perhaps I should just stay at home

When booking sub-hotels, do I select existence or non-existence? We asked a Korean to read the Korean version and she couldn't figure it out either.
