Callous disregard for the health and well-being of children is justifiably cause for state intervention. When that disregard also constitutes a real threat to the safety of a community as a whole, it is imperative that we act in the interest of public safety.

The recent explosion in whooping cough cases is bad enough; the recurrence of measles, being substantially more dangerous, is especially alarming. And the fact that absolute bunk "science," carried on by a fraudulent crank who was stripped of his medical licence for falsifying data in a misguided effort to promote his crackpot agenda, continues to influence the decisions of parents and other caregivers reflects very poorly on the the scientific literacy of the general population.

Measles was effectively eradicated from this country over a decade ago, polio even further back. Unfortunately, the backwards influence of religion continues to repress the most vulnerable in many other parts of the world, and the nightmarish disfigurement and maiming wrought by preventable disease continues to afflict millions. The contours of a trend in the US are coming into focus, and it points towards a slide back to a time when these nightmares were a reality in this country.

The gaggle of cackling celebrity imbeciles who continue to advocate against the vaccination of children, thereby wantonly exposing ever-increasing numbers of innocent youth to legions of horrific infectious diseases that man has finally triumphed over, deserve to be raked over the coals of public opinion and decried as psychopaths.

NO, NO, NO!  The absolute last thing anyone should be doing  is encouraging additional unnecessary reliance on automation. Want to monitor your approach with an ILS or GPS? Fine, but first and foremost, LOOK OUT THE WINDOW! This runway had a PAPI available and functioning; there is no need for an electronic glideslope when you can see a visual one. The extra fiddling around would not have done this crew any favors, they were so behind the airplane already.

Too many people are living their lives with their heads down, whether it be with cell phones while driving (even walking), or flying while staring at all the pretty lights on modern avionics, which are admittedly a huge plus when flying hard IFR (if you understand the systems), but which generally add nothing to a clear weather approach (other then act as a distraction). A pilot with as many hours as the Asiana captain had should be very sensitive to the visual clues about glideslope and airspeed without looking at any instruments (and should have been clued in to take a quick glance as the speed tape).

This smacks of the usual knee-jerk "someone do something!" reaction, all the more disturbing because it simultaneously both does nothing to address the Asiana crash and encourages even more heads-down flying.

On the eve of the anniversary of US independence, it behooves us to reflect on the remarkable resiliency of our republic. Democracy is much more than just carrying a fair vote. The Founding Fathers set in motion an admirably engineered system of government, replete with protections of personal liberty from state tyranny and enshrined with a system of checks and balances that is both sufficiently rigorous to hold at bay the encroachment of opportunistic politicians yet flexible enough to allow the multitude of institutions comprising the "state" to evolve together as the American experience warrants. But beyond that, the fortitude of the American people as a whole in carrying out and on, frequently in the face of domestic, foreign, racial or civil adversity, the responsibilities of democratic citizens is the principal attribute underlying the successes our nation has known.

While July 4, 1776 was the beginning of something special, that the ideals that made that day's fateful Declaration necessary and proper survive to this day is the real cause for celebration.

Sadly, I, like many others in the aviation community, have had occasion to write about the irresponsible exploits of David Riggs. A reckless fraud with a wanton indifference for human life, many of us long hoped he would off himself with with of his stupid stunts. Well he finally did, but not before taking another innocent life with him.

What a shame the FAA didn't properly address the voluminous litany of violations this imbecile chalked up over the years.

The only glitch is not disqualifying smokers of all ages from insurance coverage, period. Not covering expenses relating to the litany of severe adverse health consequences caused and/or exacerbated by smoking would be an acceptable compromise, but legislating that smokers may not be charged more for the same coverage as a non-smoker defies common sense, unless your goal is to ensure that insurance coverage remains unnecessarily expensive for everyone.

Should seriously drop the word "bakery" from their name.Nothing fresh available on a weekend morning. This is little more than a glorified bodega with bad food, bad service and high prices.
