+Brian Salter , that is where we go back to the faculty of language and its byproducts. That is where we are different and nothing, including other species and human creations, could reach us.

The Right To Gerrymander?

This is not ( merely )  a ( direct )  case about stopping gerrymandering ----which would be bad enough, but at least it would be on the offensive .

Its far worse.
Its a defensive case. One about letting a state legislature break their own state laws to gerrymander anyway, and then destroy a legally created  Citizens Commission.

This could also vastly subvert the US constitution, by denying that power is derived first from the People,  and only then  the State and Federal govt.

Ariziona is arguing a version of "States Rights" that exists only because its explicitly authorized by the Constitution; AND

ONE that denies the same rights to the People, who's power its derived from.
This is BAD!

( Shakes head Sadly) I have evil-govt fatigue. I thought that would end,  after Bush was out of office.

Thanks to

Redistricting doesn’t always capture the public’s imagination, but you should care about this Supreme Court case and the problem of gerrymandering.

Debates are an utterly irrational institution, which should not exist in a reasonable world. In a debate, the assumption is that each participant has a position, and must keep to this position whatever eventuates in the interchange. In a debate, it is an institutional impossibility (i.e., if it happened, it would no longer be a debate) for one person to say to the other: that’s a good argument, I will have to change my views accordingly. But the latter option is the essence of any interchange among rational people. So calling it a debate is wrong to start with and contributes to ways of thinking and behaving that should be abandoned.
