Karma is important, so today I threw some money at the makers of AmoK Exif Sorter & CGSecurity's PhotoRec.
Not sure if I mentioned it, but a few weeks ago I was trying to backup my digital photos from a Linux partition to Windows but there was an error and I lost nearly everything! Almost all my photos were gone, dating back to 2003 and some even before that.
Fortunately, PhotRec was able to find and restore the files, but without their original filenames or directories. At this point Exif Sorter stepped in and renamed them all for me using the metadata that is embedded in the photos - the date & time the photo was taken.
66 GB & 40 000 files later, I'm in a good position to re-orgainze those pictures, without all the tedium of getting them in the right place to start.
Easily worth the $100.
