Dog and cat lovers - The National Advertising Division, an entity which regulates advertisements, believes that Blue Buffalo commercials claiming that chicken by-products are not "real meat" is misleading to consumers. Do you think that by-products (which may include things like feet, backs, livers, lungs, heads, brains, spleens, frames, kidneys, stomachs, intestines, and Undeveloped eggs) are "real meat"? Are you comfortable with feeding by-products to your dogs? http://www.examiner.com/article/blue-buffalo-draws-fire-over-pet-food-ads

Dog and Cat Lovers - Mars Inc of McLean, VA has today announced it is buying the Iams, Eukanuba and Natura Pet brands from Procter and Gamble for $2.9 billion. Mars Petcare’s current products include Pedigree, Whiskas, Royal Canin and Banfield. Is this good or bad news for our pets? Please share this important story with other pet owners. And be sure to share your thoughts with us, too.

I was a big Iams fan before they were bought out, and initially, I felt it was good they got bought, as it really improved distribution.  Iams basically created the premium dog food market, but I felt their quality went down some, as one would expect, when their distribution channels meant huge increases in volume.  Our new puppy was on Eukanuba, so we fed that for several months, and had no reason not to like it. But we switched to a higher quality food, and I think that is important: the original premium brands have been surpassed by smaller competitors in a market they created. There are so many choices today, that I don't think who owns Iams, etc really makes too much difference. Their formulas will stay much the same. Royal Canin is quite similar to Eukanuba in my view, so wonder what happens to these similar brands?

Now, there are no companies as secretive as Mars. They are well run, but intensely private. Should be interesting when recalls etc occur.

Dog and Cat Owners - Settlement has been reached in the recent class action lawsuit against Diamond Pet Food and Costco regarding the 2012 series of recalls. Affected brands include certain product lines of Apex, Canidae, Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul, Country Value, Diamond, Diamond Naturals, Kirkland Signature, Natural Balance, Premium Edge, Professional, 4Health, Solid Gold, Taste of the Wild and Wellness. Proof of purchase is not required. However, Class Members who purchased a recalled pet food product and are seeking economic damages as a result of injury or death to their animals must submit proof of their expenses to claim compensation from the Diamond pet food recall class action settlement. Details can be found by visiting the following link. http://www.topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/open-lawsuit-settlements/22050-diamond-pet-foods-recall-class-action-settlement/

Dog Owners - We just posted a new review for Earth's Pride dry dog food which is sold at BJ's Wholesale Club. This product used to be known as Berkley and Jensen and sported a much lower rating. The new chicken recipe and lamb recipe each received 4 stars and the duck earned a 5 stars. What do you think about the quality of this new food? http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/earths-pride-pet-dog-food/

Dog Lovers - A kitten in Australia nearly died after his owners fed him a meat-free diet of only potatoes, rice milk, and pasta. A veterinarian who treated the tabby said, "Concern for animal welfare has to include a biologically-appropriate diet." Do you feed vegetarian and/or homemade dog food? If so, what do you do to avoid nutrient deficiencies?
A KITTEN has almost died after its owners fed it a strict vegan diet.
