OS X  -

Listeners to the podcast will have heard about my recent Mactastrophe after upgrading my iMac to OS X Yosemite.

Well, with a fresh flash drive full of 10.10.2 love in hand, I set out to upgrade the ol' beast once again and very nearly had a Mactastrophe II on my hands upon reboot.

Unlike Mactastrophe I where NOTHING loaded and apps seemed to "forget" me (due to an obscure permission problem), this time out the Dock loaded correctly, my apps seemed to work, and all my files appeared on the Desktop right where I'd left them -- though they took far longer to appear than they should (see below) -- but I couldn't seem to open any System Preference panes! The main System Preferences window would appear and I could click to open something like iCloud, but the pane would open and crash out again almost immediately with an error along the lines of "Preferences Error, could not load XXXX pane" (I wish I'd taken a screen shot to have the exact wording).

Very strange.

On top of that, I also noticed another error in my Security system preference (before it closed) mentioning an app called "MyApplication" that won't run because it's not signed.  It offered to let me run it, but the preference pane closed too quickly before I could act on it.  The strange thing there is I typically operate my Mac to allow apps downloaded from "Anywhere".

Hmm.

And then there was that slow loading Desktop.  It was taking a little over a minute(!) for the icons to appear.  Once there, however, they seemed to work as expected.

So what was going on?

Well, before setting out to restore from my clone of Mavericks, I decided to take a break and shut down the Mac for the night.

Besides, by the time I'd noticed the depth of the problems, I'd already downgraded iTunes to 11.4 and upgraded 1Password to the Yosemite edition, as well as dropped the updated Network Utility back on my Dock again -- so I was a bit invested in this newly upgraded OS.

This morning I booted my ailing friend and set out to do a little digging within Console (as I'd done in Mactastrophe I) but as soon as I opened the app, I saw the Console log simply going BONKERS!

It wasn't even stopping long enough for me to read what was happening!

So I took a screen shot.

(There's a little Quick Tip for you: If things are flying by on screen too quickly, take a screen shot to capture what's going on!)

That showed me that the Mac was unable to write to a file called Accounts3.sqlite buried in my Home > Library > Accounts folder.

Spelunking into that folder I noticed a little lock on the icon.

Aha!  The file was locked for some reason.  A quick Get Info, an uncheck of the "Locked" box and voila! the run-away Console log stopped, my System Preferences all began working again, AND my desktop files now load up within seconds upon reboot.

Things once again seem normal.

*whew*

That makes the lesson of the day: Console is your friend.
