Are Europe's megalithic sites artificial songlines - massive mnemonics for memory recall? I've just read Lynne Kelly's book 'The Memory Code', and I've tried to put a visit to the megaliths of Carnac, France, into the context she writes about.

A short account of traveling to Adygea - a republic within Russia. A lovely place, on the edge of the Caucasus mountains, full of forests, and .... honey.

I love the term 'Nebelwald' for Cloud Forest. There's something far more evocative in the sound than the English words.

A few years ago I spent a few stints working as a geologist in the rugged and rainforested landscape of Aceh. This is a part of Sumatra that was, up until the 2004 tsunami, fighting an independence battle with the central Indonesian government. This post describes the typical conditions me and my colleagues worked in.

Sometimes it's worth a bit of a splurge when you travel - especially if a meal at what could be Russia's top restaurant, with beers, appetisers, mains and dessert, and a recommendation from Anthony Bourdain, comes to US$42....

I spent 12 months over 2015-2016 in Nanjing, China. The city is the site of an infamous massacre that happened in World War Two, where over 400,000 people were killed. One of the massacres has been excavated and forms the centerpiece of a museum.

Just come back from a wet, windy, haily, wild-sea trip to the Catlins Coast. Always keeping my eyes out for possible dinosaur traces. There is only one Jurassic dinosaur bone known from New Zealand - but good potential in some places for footprints.
