After some discussions at work, I decided to start capturing some of my thoughts on being an effective tech lead or engineering manager. https://www.opte.ch/news/2016/12/23/how-to-lead-an-engineering-team

Some thoughts on how yesterdays luxuries for the wealthy people of the world become tomorrow's standard for living thanks to technology and how to distill these patterns to see where things are headed. I also break down some of the key challenges with some big technological breakthroughs coming soon.

I haven't been writing much lately, but Jony Ive's promotion to CDO is very interesting. Tough to draw any firm conclusions from it, but here are a few thoughts that crossed my mind (definitely not conclusions, just "what if" considerations).

Taking data and anecdotes tweeted/retweeted from Benedict Evans and data from Deepak Abbot's recent piece on Medium I outline some considerations when evaluating ARPU between iOS and Android. This comparison isn't exactly a fair one to make without proper perspective; there are really several smartphone markets and many things to consider.

+Twitter is profoundly wonderful, and many people who don't agree haven't actually experienced Twitter. I would argue the the amount of work that it takes to make Twitter amazing for you as a new user is overwhelming and a huge roadblock to their growth (and killing the public perception of the service), but overall I'm quite bullish.

Some thoughts on iMessage and Hangouts and how neither one is perfect. The idea that a server contains the master copy of a conversation (like with Hangouts) results in an impact to the speed and load time of an app beyond reason; therefore, despite drawbacks, I very much prefer iMessage.

There are a many great discussions to be had surrounding drones, and a lot of really important questions left to answer, but I really think this is the beginning of something big.

Happy New Year!

Thank you +Erik Sunde for pointing me toward what appears to be the first ever app to replace the native iOS email client!

Overall, I was underwhelmed by Google's new approach to an email client - Inbox. I will keep an eye on it as it progresses, but for now I will not be adopting it and wouldn't recommend it highly to anyone who has even the slightest control on their inbox currently.
